Let us set the scene for you. Hanoi lies in the north of the country and has a fascinating display of street life, food and architecture in its charming Old Quarter. Drive four hours east and you will find the serene and majestic Halong Bay, where hundreds of limestone karsts pierce through the calm waters. We have tried and tested various cruises in Halong Bay and only work with our favourites – we recommend two nights in the dry and warm season and one night at other times.

If you are seeking a slice of tribal life, head to the ‘Rural North’ – Sapa is a night-train away from Hanoi (in north Vietnam by the border with China) but we prefer Mai Chau and Pu Luong national park, which is just a three hour drive north-west of Hanoi, and less touristy. Expect mountains, valleys, rice paddies and a fascinating insight into rural tribal life.
