Our top must-see wonders

By Valeria Garibotti on 26th October, 2023

Sometimes being the traveller is just required in order not to miss out on a country’s must sees.

So, do not be afraid to join the tourist path, embrace it, and enjoy a country’s main highlights. After all, would you go to Jordan and not see Petra, or would you miss Chichen Itza in Mexico and Angkor Wat in Cambodia?

We have rounded up our destinations icons and we know you will agree with us, a country’s highlights are thus for a reason, and must be seen at least once in our lives.

Argos Cappadocia

TURKEY

Cappadocia – a land like no other, just a short internal flight from Istanbul and you will be mesmerised by the magical lunar-landscape of this fascinating region of central Turkey.  With its intriguing topography of ‘fairy chimneys’, subterranean dwellings and rock-hewn churches, a holiday to Cappadocia is extraordinary, and staying in a unique cave hotel is an unforgettable experience.

Head out with your private guide for the day to explore the many villages and underground cities of Cappadocia, or spoil yourself with a bird’s eye view from the basket of a hot air balloon at sunrise, an unmissable treat!

Dubrovnik City Walls

CROATIA

Dubrovnik is undoubtedly Croatia’s most famous city, thanks to the ancient old town and recent Game of Thrones fame. Whether you are viewing the town from the 25-meter city walls, by sea, or at the top of Srđ mountain (you can take the cable car if you don’t fancy the hike) you can’t help but be in awe of Dubrovnik’s majestic beauty. Dubrovnik was once an independent republic and has a fascinating history, so we highly recommend a private walking tour to get beneath the surface.

We love to combine exploring the old town with a stay on the Lapad Peninsula for some relaxation. Our perfect trip also includes a tour of the picturesque Peljesac Peninsula home to wine regions, world-class farmed oysters, salt pans, and one of the longest fortified walls in the world, second only to the Great Wall of China!

Autumn breaks in Slovenia

SLOVENIA

Lake Bled is not just a postcard-perfect destination; it’s a real-life fairytale. Its bluish-green waters mirror the sky, with a charming church perched on an islet and a medieval castle clinging dramatically to a rocky cliff. Towering above are the peaks of the Julian Alps and Karavanke, adding to the awe-inspiring backdrop. This picturesque setting is a sensory delight, captivating visitors with its natural beauty.

But Lake Bled isn’t just about aesthetics; it offers a wide range of experiences for every season. For adventure seekers, epic hikes await in the surrounding hills. Meanwhile, indulging in the famous Bled cake, known as “kremšnita,” lakeside is a delectable treat. Regardless of when you visit, Lake Bled promises an unforgettable, enchanting experience that goes beyond fairy tales and into the realm of real-life magic.

Escape for a weekend away or include it as part of a tour of Slovenia.  Or maybe you need some more proof that Slovenia is a real life fairytale

LUXURY SAILING IN GREECE

Caves are our must see on a sailing holiday in the Ionian. Each island has so many natural formations, we could not possibly choose one; you simply must see them all.

Take an early morning sail from Gaios to the Blue Caves on the West side of Paxos, to beat the rush of the ‘tourist boats’ and experience the Caves in tranquillity and privacy.

If you start or finish your holiday in the village of Agia Effimia you can take a short taxi from your yacht to the underground lake and the caves of Melissani. When the sunlight hits the water it really is a stunning sight to behold.

Finally, Papa Nicholas Cave. Once though to be the home for submarines during World War Two the cave is the second largest in Greece and well worth a visit. Your Captain can take you inside using the tender that comes along with your luxury yacht.

From the comfort of your yacht you can visit all of these islands and more on our One Way route between Corfu and Kefalonia.

Madeira

MADEIRA

Perched on the north-western tip of Madeira, the charming town of Porto Moniz is a gem of natural beauty and outdoor recreation. What sets it apart are the striking lava-formed pools, sculpted by ancient volcanic activity and continuously replenished by the sea. These pools, protected from the open ocean, offer a safe and family-friendly environment for various activities. Snorkelling enthusiasts can explore underwater marvels, while swimmers can delight in the refreshing, clear waters.

The surrounding volcanic rocks create a dramatic backdrop, providing a sense of awe and wonder. Porto Moniz is not just a place for aquatic adventures but also an excellent spot for leisurely strolls along the coastline. Whether you’re seeking thrilling exploration or a peaceful escape, this destination showcases the wonders of nature in a way that is uniquely Madeiran.

MEXICO

We suggest you stay in the magical town of Valladolid and leave early to skip the crowds and visit the most important. Mayan ruins of the Yucatan Peninsula: Chichen Itza, known also as “One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World”. You can also visit some cenotes – underground sinkholes that this part of Mexico is famous for.

Chichen Itza was one of the greatest Mayan centers of the Yucatan and one of the most important examples of the Mayan – Toltec civilization in the Yucatan. This is definitely one to tick off the bucket list.
Cuba holidays

CUBA

Trinidad, nestled on the southern coast of Cuba, is an absolute must-see destination for a multitude of reasons. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it boasts an incredibly well-preserved colonial history, with its cobblestone streets, pastel-colored buildings, and rich architectural heritage taking visitors on a captivating journey back in time. The city is a living museum, with attractions like Plaza Mayor, the Palacio Cantero, and the Valle de los Ingenios showcasing its historical grandeur. Trinidad’s vibrant culture, lively music, and welcoming locals offer an authentic Cuban experience. The nearby Playa Ancón beach, the Escambray Mountains, and the vibrant arts scene add further dimensions to this remarkable destination. Whether you’re a history buff, a culture enthusiast, or an adventurer, Trinidad has something to offer every traveller.

ARGENTINA

Buenos Aires is one of the most beautiful and iconic cities in the South American continent. An elegant capital, where you will find some of the country’s most celebrated highlights, including tango and La Casa Rosada.

Once home to international figures like Eva Peron, this iconic pink palace is the symbol of the city and country. Combine a visit here to a tango show, a tour of colourful La Boca and charming San Telmo, and you have ticked off some of the capitals must-see.

Of course, for a complete Argentina holiday, we recommend including the staggeringly beautiful Iguazu Falls and the glaciers of Patagonia. The Perito Moreno here, is the king of them all and arguably one of the world’s most famous glaciers and a must see.

EASTER ISLAND

Rapa Nui is one of Chile’s most mesmerising places, a destination with a true mystical aura around it. It is one of the remotest inhabited destinations in the world and its Moais must be one of the most recognisable icons of any country on the planet.

With daily flights from the Chilean capital, Easter Island is surprisingly easy to reach from the country’s mainland. We cannot recommend it enough for a true once in your life adventure and we suggest to stay at least 4 nights to soak it all in without feeling rushed.

Combine Easter Island with Torres del Paine in Patagonia to tick off two highlights in one holiday.

BRAZIL

A view from Corcovado mountain and Christ the Redeemer is a must to appreciate Rio de Janeiro’s beauty. One of the world’s most dazzling views will open up in front of you: Guanabara bay, Ipanema and Copacabana beaches, Sugarloaf mountain and so much more.

Plus, the statue itself is one of the 7 wonders of the modern world!

Rio de Janeiro itself is one of the most recognisable and iconic cities in the world. Besides its beaches and landmarks, taking the cable car to go around Santa Teresa is a fantastic highlight or going on a night out in Lapa. Plus, this city offers other intangible highlights like the samba and the Brazilian lust for life.

BORNEO

For many, wildlife is the primary reason to visit Borneo and while your best chance of seeing it is to go to multiple places, if time or budget is tight, the Kinabatangan River is where to focus. We also think it’s a must-see in Borneo given its natural beauty, delightful lodges, and sheer variety of wildlife that call it home.

Whether it’s orangutans, crocodiles, pygmy elephants, proboscis monkeys, rhinoceros hornbills, colugos, pig-tailed macaques, gibbons, or tarsiers you’re hoping to see, there’s a chance you can spot them in the wild along Borneo’s longest river.

We suggest staying for three nights to increase your odds and including a night safari plus an extra afternoon excursion with a guide to look for whatever you’re most hoping to see. Alternatively, stay four nights split between two lodges in different parts of the river to really increase your odds!

PHILIPPINES

Gliding across clear aquamarine water filled with colourful coral and sea life, lush green cliffs rising all around, the sun sparkling on white sands of small islands that may only exist during low tide – this part of El Nido is one of the nation’s true highlights. A day of island hopping with snorkeling, kayaking, and plenty of time to bask in the beauty is not to be missed!

It’s tough to pick only place in the Philippines for our top sight to see which is why we think this itinerary really hits the nail on the head. See the jaw-dropping rice terraces of Banaue in the north, the Underground River of Palawan (designated a new wonder of the world!), and have days to island hop and explore El Nido. You’ll hit three of our must-see spots in one holiday.

LAOS

Laos is a peaceful country with gorgeous scenery and there are countless places that we think it’s a shame to miss. Which makes picking one spot as a must-see nearly impossible so we’re going to be a bit cheeky and go with the town of Luang Prabang.

This UNESCO-protected town is a delight to walk, bicycle, or simply sit and watch the world go slowly by. A visit to Wat Xieng Thong, a beautiful example of classical Luang Prabang architecture, can offer insight into the history and culture of the Lao people while stopping by Kuang Si Waterfall just after sunrise allows for a magical experience in a stunning place.

A boat ride along the Mekong, meeting the team behind one of the most ethical elephant encounters in the region, and seeing the monks in their saffron robes collect alms are a few more of our Luang Prabang most-sees.

MALAYSIA

From much of Kuala Lumpur, it’s easy to spot these iconic towers which hold the title of tallest twin towers in the world. If you aren’t afraid of heights, head up to the skybridge and observation areas for stunning views of Kuala Lumpur and to learn about how the building was constructed. There are even interactive exhibits for kids and the young-at-heart.

If you’re more comfortable on the ground, head for the base of the towers in the evening and catch a light show. Or stop by during the day for a photo in front of the towers – simply follow the crowds to find the best spots to pose.

If you want to go up the towers, be sure to book in advance as visits are timed and routinely sell out!

For more of our must-sees in Kuala Lumpur, see here.

SINGAPORE

Standing near the Merlion with a view across the water to the surfboard roof of Marina Bay Sands is an absolute must. The futuristic ArtScience Museum and “Durian building” (officially known as Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay) round out the view and at sunset, the colours can be dazzling. To really soak in the scene, take a river cruise that brings you to the bay.

Singapore is a nation that continues to reinvent itself so while this is our top must-see at the time of writing, it could be different next year. Our recommendation is to include at least one guided experience when visiting Singapore so you can find out firsthand what’s new, what’s amazing, and find a few spots that are soon-to-be the next must-sees.

CAYMAN ISLANDS

There aren’t many places in the world where you can trust a stingray to massage your back and hold still long enough to be raised to the surface for a kiss (Caymanians say it’s 7 years of good luck!). At Stingray City, you’ll find dozens of these friendly rays in water shallow enough to stand, making it accessible to even those not so confident in the ocean. Don’t miss it!

Take a one or two-night cruise around the stunning UNESCO Halong Bay in Vietnam

VIETNAM

The liveaboard cruisers in Halong Bay are a dream come true for a couple of nights – glide between the limestone formations to your secluded bay and from here kayak, swim, explore caves or simply take advantage of the hospitality on the luxury floating hotel.

Our favourite boats take you a little off the beaten path, heading away from the day cruisers and any boat traffic to more undiscovered corners. We can even organise private chartered cruises if you like.

SRI LANKA

As the Sri Lanka specialist I might be biased, but Sri Lanka is pretty much all highlights! Our Classic 2 weeks tour (LINK)  is the shortest way to hit all the highlights really – taking in the ancient beauty of the cultural triangle, the idyllic tea country, the famous scenic train, go on a safari in the numerous national parks to see elephants and leopards, relax on the south coast beaches and visit the UNESCO Heritage Galle Fort Town too.

But if you push me, the Cultural Triangle wins as my key highlight. Ascending Sigiriya, constructed in the 5th century, is a humbling experience as well as a rewarding physically challenging one, and cycling around the ancient capital of Polonnaruwa is a fun contrast. Some of our favourite hotels are found here too.

CAMBODIA

Recognised by Guiness World Records as the largest religious structure in the world, Angkor Wat has to be seen to be believed. The sprawling ancient temples complex has a huge impact on all visitors and you simply can’t visit Cambodia without taking in atleast 3 or 4 of the main structures.

We love to include a sunrise or sunset visit for the ultimate experience too. The town of Siem Reap, home of the temples, has developed to support the ever increasing numbers of tourists and actually our favourite hotels are set a little away from this hustle and bustle – you need a calm environment between temple treks, perhaps a spa treatment and a swim in luxurious surroundings? We’ve got you covered.
