Exploring South Africa Holiday

Madikwe & Waterberg Safaris

The Madikwe & Waterberg safaris region is an easy 3 – 4 hour drive from Johannesburg by car, however transfers and charter flight options are also possible making access seamless and ideal for couples and families looking for a malaria free South Africa safari holiday.

The variety of game viewing in the region offers a diverse bush experience and you can enjoy anything from the classical big five safari to horse-back riding in game rich areas.

The Madikwe Game Reserve is a 75 000 hectare reserve close to the border of Botswana and is home to all the ‘big five’ as well as being popular for its wild dog sightings, amongst a variety of other game and birdlife. The reserve has been rehabilitating since 1991 from what was once cattle farmlands and now offers a great wildlife experience with a variety of lodges to suite all tastes.

The Waterberg region, incorporating the Welgevonden Game Reserve, is home to the ‘big five’ as well as a variety of other game including the rare and shy aardwolf. Bird life is also excellent. There is a lot of history in this area including artefacts of stone-age times. Vast open landscapes and natural beauty along with excellent game viewing makes this area a good safari holiday location.

Both destinations are easily included into a safari holiday of South Africa and can also be complimented with a few nights in either Sun City or a more ambitious holiday extending to the Kruger area and Cape Town.  Access between the areas are becoming more popular and if you are a little adventorous then you can even combine this with Mashatu in Botswana.

Below is a selection of our favourite properties of the Madikwe & Waterberg safaris lodges, but email us for assistance on how to include these into your South Africa safari holiday.
