This itinerary is focused around discovering the Maya archeological sites of Belize and takes in all corners of the country. As with all our trips, it can be tailored to suit you, which can include adding on the Mayan sites in Guatemala and/or Mexico. As an example, this 12 day trip will focus on Belize only, with the exception of an overnight trip to the Tikal site in Guatemala.
A warm Belizean welcome awaits you at the Belize International Airport; your driver will collect you and take you to your boat launch on the New River, where you will enjoy a brilliant wildlife spotting boat trip to your first hotel.
This morning you will have a guided tour of Lamanai Maya site, an important site because it was the longest occupied Maya city in Belize. After a morning tour, you travel west into the Cayo District and to your first jungle lodge. This will be your base as you discover the next Maya sites of your trip; Cahal Pech and Xunantunich. After a welcome drink and check in, relax into your holiday and enjoy the jungle sights and sounds.
Today a guide will collect you and take you on an excursion to take in the Maya site of Xunantunich and a visit to the San Antonio’s women’s group. The San Antonio Women’s Group is a wonderful opportunity to learn about how this community are keeping their Maya heritage alive through pottery. Eat some delicious Maya food too!
You have today at your leisure so you can choose to enjoy any of the wonderful activities on offer at your lodge. Take out a canoe and explore the river, all the while looking out for the incredible birdlife and monkeys!
Today you will be taken over the border, into Guatemala to visit the incredible Tikal Maya site in Tikal National Park. This is an overnight trip that gives you the opportunity to see Tikal at sunset and sunrise, when the site is at its most quiet and beautiful. Your guide will drive you over the border to the site for a tour. Then you can relax in your hotel before returning to Tikal for a magical sunset, viewed from atop the temple! Your guide will lead a night walk back to the hotel, offering up the chance to spot jungle critters!
An early start today rewards you with an awe inspiring sunrise at Tikal. After this amazing spectacle you will have some breakfast and then head back into Belize and on to your next hotel.
Today you will transfer to the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve which is a change from the broad-leaf jungle. You enter into higher altitude and Pine forests, offering up all kinds of different flora and fauna. You are now situated ideally to explore the Maya site of Caracol; the largest in Belize. Check into your gorgeous hotel and relax with stunning river views and the melodious birdsongs.
Today a guide will take you to Caracol Maya site, with stops at beautiful waterfalls for a refreshing dip and scenic views. Caracol is an impressive ruin that sits isolated, far out in the jungle. Forget crowds or gift shops; this is a truly special, remote place with a fascinating history.
Today you will travel to the coast, where you will stay right on the beach with a beautiful Caribbean sea view. Your overland journey will take around 4 hours but there is plenty to see and do along the way so it can be broken up with a tour. Caves, a zip-lining experience, an Inland Blue Hole tour or even the Belize zoo, a zoo unlike any other as the barriers between zoo animals and the wild are semi-permeable… all are possible.
You have today at your leisure. Explore the nearby village of Placencia; a vibrant, laid back place with plenty of amazing restaurants, bars and shops. Relax on the beach, take out a kayak or a paddle board. You can arrange to have a boat trip for snorkelling or fishing or even take another guided tour south and inland to visit the Maya ruins of Lubaantun and Nim Li Punit.
This is your last day. Soak up the sun, swim, snorkel, have a sunset drink and feast on delicious seafood.
Today you will transfer back to Belize International airport for your trip home. Safe travels!
