Mexico’s haciendas are stunning properties, reflecting Mexico’s colorful history, they were born after the Spanish conquest can be seen all over the country originating from the 16th century on, they reached their peak in the 19th century. Recent decades have seen a good number of them rescued from falling into ruin and many have been turned into hotels, as a result they are living something of a renaissance across the country.
We have hand picked some of our favourites so that Fleewinter customers can enjoy a calmer pace of life and immerse themselves in nature, as they are often set on large plots of land. They are a chance to have a glimpse into what life was like at this time. Haciendas started as agricultural and commercial centers, becoming cultural centers, and finally growing into small towns. Created by mainly Spanish and Italian architects and influenced by Moorish, Renaissance and Neoclassical styles. European traditions with indigenous materials and styles were combined as is true of much of the Mexico we see today. They are a jump great off point from which to experience and pay respect to the 3,000 years of Maya culture, archaeological sites, cenotes, and verdant jungles that make this country so magical.
