Mexico City is synonymous simply with the artist Frida Kahlo and her husband the muralist Diego Rivera. Various Travel publications have now named Mexico’s capital a dream destination to visit and a major draw being its thriving art scene. There are galleries and independent spaces are popping up all over the city with a hip, new generation of art collectors. Held every February, Zona Maco, the biggest art fair in Latin America, is testament to Mexico City’s growth into an art-world hub, you could consider travelling at this time. San Miguel de Allende is an art enthusiast’s dream destination with over 100 art galleries, its attractive and cosmopolitan appearance blended with the city’s historical and architectural heritage, means it is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico. In 2008 it was recognised, along with the Sanctuary of Jesus of Atotonilco, as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Once you arrive at the Mexico City International Airport you will be transferred to a hotel located downtown. Since there are no scheduled activities in the afternoon, you can enjoy a walk in the area. We can book you one of the many epic restaurants or you can freestyle and eat all of the tacos and tostadas the markets have to offer. We will suggest galleries and independent spaces for you to explore.
A Mexico City Tour will help you acclimatise. Some sites to visit are the National Palace, Zocalo Square, Metropolitan Cathedral, the Anthropology Museum (which presents the country’s many pre-Hispanic civilisations: Toltecs – Zapotecs) and the world famous Guadalupe Shrine.
Today you will visit Casa Azul (The Blue House). Here you can see Frida Kahlo, Mexico’s most famous artist’s home that she shared with her husband the muralist Diego Rivera. Now a museum you can imagine their life here whilst admiring earthenware cooking pots on display within the cobalt-colour walls. After visiting Frida’s home and immersing yourself in the Coyoacan district in Mexico City’s south, walking through squares and streets where she lived and stopping for a bite to eat or a cerveza is a magical experience.
Today we will depart to the Archeological site of Teotihuacan where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the area from the top of the pyramids (or a hot air balloon if that takes your fancy!) and spend the afternoon exploring the city.
Today you can visit the once run-down, central district of Plaza Carso and two fabulous museums: the Jumex (housing the art of the family that owns Mexico’s eponymous fruit-juice empire) and the Soumaya, which displays 5,000 pieces from Carlos Slim, the second richest man on earth, Slim’s own collection.
Today you’ll visit the Xochimilco canals, “the Venice of Mexico,” on one of it’s its colourful trajineras (tourist boats), eating Mexican food and being serenaded by mariachi bands!
Today you will depart for San Miguel de Allende; it’s cobbled streets, wooded courtyards, fine architectural details and sumptuous interiors will enchant you. Here you visit the more than 100 art galleries whilst you take art lessons and workshops if this appeals to you.
It is easy to spend a day simply wandering through the streets of San Miguel capturing photos of its Colonial and Spanish architecture. It is clear to see why it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city’s rich history dates back to 1542 a time in which it played an important role as a hub in the silver trade.
Today you have the option to take an art class and try you hand at creating some of your own art drawing from all of the inspiring Mexican culture you have soaked up along your journey.
Day you will return home full of stories about your artistic adventures.
