On this trip focused on the south of Mexico you’ll travel from Chiapas and Yucatan. First, you then head to the state of Chiapas, and to visit Sumidero Canyon, you’ll then continue to the mountain town of San Cristobal de la Casas (a Fleewinter fave!) to walk the stunning cobbled streets, and visit churches, cafes and artisan markets.
Next, you will be heading to the Caribbean coast, but not before you get to experience Agua Azul falls, and the ruins of Palenque. You will end your trip by sampling the beautiful beaches, breathtaking cenotes, magical ruins and colourful towns this coast has on offer.
Finally, we whisk you off via boat to Isla Holbox to enjoy all of the wildlife and beach activities on this stunning Island. This works perfectly as a self-drive holiday.
Your English speaking driver will greet you at either Mexico City or Cancun airport and transport you to your boutique hotel.
After breakfast at the hotel restaurant and prepare yourself to depart from Mexico City/Cancun to Chiapas on a domestic flight. At your arrival at Tuxtla Gutierrez enjoy a guided tour visiting the Sumidero Canyon, a protected area at the Federal level since 1980, is a magnificent geological landscape. Here, granite cliffs and walls with a height of over 1000 meters surround the cause of the Grijalva River. Afterwords you will visit the small village of Chapa de Corzo, where you will learn about the local traditions. In the afternoon we will continue to the charming mountain town of San Cristobal de las Casas (a Fleewinter favourite!) and to your hotel. You are free to relax in your hotel, spend the evenings exploring the easy to navigate grid of cobbled streets, enjoying the electric mix of cafes, restaurants bars; or we can book you a specially selected restaurant. This really is a magical little town.
After breakfast at the hotel, you will enjoy a City Tour in San Cristobal de las Casas, visiting the Santo Domingo church and a typical local market. Later on, you’ll discover the Native Community of Zinacatan and San Juan Chamula, learning about the native people of Chiapas and their traditions. Watch the laborious handcrafts of the weaver women, who, with a loom at their waists, produce magnificent textile pieces, including tablecloths, bedspreads, cushion covers and traditional “huipiles”, called “ponchos”. You’ll visits also the Juan Bautista Church.
Early morning you will depart to the spectacular Agua Azul falls, the most fascinating area in the mountains located between Palenque and Ocosingo. The “Cascadas de Agua Azul” (Spanish for “Blue Water Waterfall”) are found near the Municipality of Tumbalá, in the middle of the Chiapas rainforest and consists of many cataracts following one after another, as part of the “Cascadas de Agua Azul Natural Park”. The larger cataracts may be about 6 meters (20 ft.) high. Later you’ll continue to the ruins of Palenque and your hotel there.
Today you visit one of the best archaeological sites of the country, Palenque – The largest Mesoamerican step pyramid, the Temple of Inscriptions, spotted with hieroglyphics that have contributed significantly to the study of Mayan civilisation. Located on the first rise of the mountains, the site looks out over the Usumacinta River flood plain. Later we will depart to Campeche and to your hotel.
After having breakfast at the hotel, we will explore the archeological site of Uxmal, considered the most important Mayan city of the area, hosting the famous temple “La Casa del Adivino”, the three-dimensional masks of the god Chaac, colonnades, the two-headed jaguar, and other iconographic symbols. We then continue to your hotel in Merida and a guided tour of the city. At night you will have free time in the city where you can delight your tastebuds with the traditional Mexican cuisine in one of the typical restaurants in the city.
At sunrise you can skip the crowds and visit the most important
Mayan ruins of the Yucatan Peninsula: Chichen Itza, known also as
“One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World”.
Chichen Itza was one of the greatest Mayan centers of the Yucatan and most important examples of the Mayan – Toltec civilizations here. Several buildings have survived, such as the Warriors’ Temple “El Castillo” and the circular observatory known as “El Caracol”.
At the end of the visit, you will be transferred to the colonial town of Valladolid, where you will spend the rest of the day and the night in one of the historical centre boutique hotels. You will then have an evening of exploring the colourful streets of laidback UNESCO-listed city.
Today you will enjoy the guided tour of the archeological site of Coba. The first one is located in the heart of Mayan Jungle and has the highest pyramid of the area. You can rent bicycles to explore. You will then visit your choice of famous cenotes in the area.
After having breakfast at the hotel you will be transferred to stunning Isla Holbox. Isla Holbox, is hands down Fleewinter’s favourite little Caribbean island, here you can relax, soak up the sun and enjoy all of the beach activities this stunning little island has to offer. Or if you prefer, simply do nothing at all. After all of the sites you have seen we certainly think you deserve a little time to chill.
Located north of the peninsula of Yucatan, Holbox island is the perfect place for nature lovers to enjoy tranquility whilst being immersed in an authentic tropical paradise. Here you can rent kayaks and explore the mangroves and delight in the wildlife.
Should you decide, you can also take a ride on a boat tour to discover Isla Pajaros (bird’s island), the Cenote Yalahau (a sinkhole with sweet water) in the Forest and the “Isla Pasion”, romantic and utterly deserted.
The evenings can be spent in the little central square of the island. This is a beautiful island where you can experience an unforgettable sunset.
