Classic Costa Rica

This classic tour of Costa Rica really focuses on the diverse landscapes this varied and beautiful country has. You start exploring the waterways of Tortuguero which can only be accessed by boat searching for caimans. From here zip-line through the tree canopies with views of the Arenal Volcano before Quetzal searching in the cloud forest of Monteverde. Four nights are spent on the golden sands of Nosara, known to have some of the best beaches and surf in the world before finishing your tour staying in a coffee plantation! This really will give you a true taste for this incredible country and is sure to help you fall into the Pura Vida way of life!

Your Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Costa Rica!

On arrival you will be met by a representative who will give you some documentation for your holiday and transfer you into San Jose for your first night. The capital of Costa Rica doesn’t have much for a visitor, but we recommend a night here for your early start tomorrow to the waterways of Tortuguero. Relax after your flight and perhaps try one of our restaurant recommendations.

Day 2 - The canals and waterways of Tortuguero

This morning will be an early start as you transfer to Tortuguero National Park either by road of flight. If by road the journey continues towards the Caribbean coast until you reach the local dock where boats are waiting for your hour and a half transfer up the waterways to your lodge. After a briefing settle into lunch before your first excursion this afternoon to the village of Tortuguero. You will learn about the culture here as well as about the conservation efforts to protect sea turtles here.

DAY 3 - BOAT TRIPS SEARCHING FOR WILDLIFE

Today you will visit Tortuguero National Park which will be sure to dazzle you with its great biodiversity. From the boat you will be amongst the 2000 species of plants, 400 species of trees and 405 bird species that find their home here. Guides will point out mammals such as; white-faced monkeys, howler monkeys, three-toes sloths, crocodiles, turtles and fresh water fish! The amount of wildlife here is astounding and makes for a fantastic day.

Day 4 - Transfer to the majestic Arenal Volcano

Leaving Tortuguero today by boat or plane you will be heading to the northern plains of the country where the landscape is very different. Arriving in La Fortuna you will be greeted by the impressive Arenal Volcano with its majestic, almost perfect volcanic cone. Spend the next three nights at the Arenal Springs Hotel. A slightly larger property but a great base for all the activities here with its choice of hot spring and swimming pools. Rest of the day at leisure.

Day 5 - Zip Lining Tour through the Tree Canopies

After your breakfast this morning you will be picked up for your zip-lining tour through the tree canopies. This is a wonderful way to see the jungle from above whilst having a truly exhilarating experience. There are plenty of alternative activities we can organise instead if you would like to keep your feet on firmer ground. Spend the rest of the day relaxing at your hotel enjoying all the facilities it has to offer.

Day 6 - Guided Nature Walk through Arenal Volcano National Park

This morning you will visit the Arenal Volcano National Park. You begin with a short boat ride from the Arenal Lake Dam to the start of the hike which takes you through amazing views of the lake and lookouts for birdwatching and nature photography. From here your guide will take you to the areas that were once destroyed by volcanic activity and are now in the process of regeneration and will teach you about the fascinating geology and history of the volcano.

Day 7 - Over Arenal Lake to the Cloud Forest of Monteverde

At mid-morning your transfer to Monteverde cloud forest is scheduled. This consists of a boat ride across the lake where you can watch many birds and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Once you reach the other side your driver will meet you to take you up the mountain to your destination which is 1300 metres above sea level shrouded in cloud making it a unique place for nature. There are 755 species of trees here, the planets greatest diversity of orchids and a whole host of birds. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 8 - Guided walk through the Cloud Forest

Today you will immerse yourself within the cloud forest exploring this reserve, famous for its biodiversity and conservation. The geographical, topographical and climatic conditions have determined the surprising biodiversity found here. In this forest there are four ecological “Live Zones” with different ecosystems for hundreds of species of mammals, birds, butterflies, amphibians, reptiles, insects and arachnids, as well as a large variety of plants like mosses, vines and the common trees of the Cloud Forest.

Day 9 - Head to 'Paradise'

Beach Time! Today you will be picked up from the cooler climates of the cloud forest and descend to sea level and the golden sand beaches of Nosara on the Nicoya Peninsula. Known as some of the best coastlines and surf spots in the world there is no doubt you will have a wonderful final few days relaxing in the sunshine. We have chosen Lagarta Lodge for your time here which also offers a whole host of activities to choose from.

Day 10 - 13 - Soak up sunshine on the beach

These days are at your own to relax, enjoy the sun and beach and if you so wish some optional activities that can be booked directly or please ask us if you would like them planned in advance. Make the most of fantastic surf teachers here, kayak through the mangroves, visit national parks or just relax by the pool with a book in hand.

Day 13 - Coffee Plantations of Naranjo

For your final day you will be transferred to the Central Mountain Region; specifically, to the beautiful Naranjo Coffee Plantations. This is a great place to have your final night as it is another different location offering another side to this country and also close to the airport for your flight home tomorrow. The lodge gives guests a chance to be amidst the coffee growing region, combining this with culture and nature for a relaxing stay.

Day 14 - Coffee Plantation Tour and Flight Home

On your final morning head out with your guide to a private coffee farm just 10 minutes from the lodge for an authentic Costa Rican coffee experience. You will walk through this beautiful farm learning about the produce as well as brew and drink a delicious cup of coffee in the farmers home. This property is surrounded by beautiful manicured gardens hundreds of hydrangeas and many other flowers and plants. After this head back to your lodge to freshen up before your flight home.

This itinerary costs from £2,295 per person B&B based on 2 sharing and including all private transfers but not international flights.

You can get flights from £550 per person return and do ask us for advice. We can book the flights for you, but a booking fee may apply.
