Arenal Volcano is 1633 metres above sea level and until recently the most active volcano in Central America, making it unsurprisingly a very popular spot for anyone visiting the country. It can therefore be a busy location, especially in peak season, and not the peaceful destination it once was. Properties tend to be on the larger scale to accommodate but most have beautiful views of the volcano, spacious gardens and a mixture of cold and hot-spring pools.
Visiting this part of the country tends to be for the opportunity to combine numerous adventure activities such as horse-riding, canoeing, zip-lining and walking.
