By Daphne Wijnveldt on 1st November, 2023

Picture this:

Exploring Zambia, a vast expanse of untouched wilderness, roaring rivers, and awe-inspiring waterfalls. That’s the beauty of Zambia, a landlocked country in Southern Africa known for its pristine landscapes and abundant wildlife. Recently, I had the privilege of embarking on a familiarizing journey to this remarkable destination, and it left an indelible mark on my heart. Join me as I recount my adventures, starting with the enchanting Busanga Plains and Chisa Busanga Lodge.

Busanga Plains and Chisa Busanga Lodge: A Serene Wilderness

The journey began in the heart of Kafue National Park, where the Busanga Plains stretch out as far as the eye can see. This is one of Africa’s most untouched wilderness areas and a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts. My home in this pristine environment was Chisa Busanga Lodge, a luxurious oasis nestled within the plains.

From morning game drives to captivating night safaris, the Busanga Plains offered a wealth of opportunities to witness Zambia’s incredible biodiversity. I was fortunate to encounter a variety of animals, including majestic lions, agile leopards, and elegant antelope, against the breath-taking backdrop of the plains. The most stunning experience at Chisa, were the silent game drives. It is amazing to just hear the sounds of the bush and much easier to listen to what it is telling you. For example the monkeys alarming when a predator is near.

Lower Zambezi: A Riverside Retreat at Potato Bush Camp and Sausage Tree Camp

Next on my adventure was the Lower Zambezi, a region renowned for its stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife. My first stop here was Potato Bush Camp, a charming and intimate lodge situated right on the banks of the Zambezi River. It provided a front-row seat to the mesmerizing views of the river and its inhabitants, which included elephants, hippos, and an array of birdlife. During my stay the Mahogany trees were flowering and the soft smell of vanilla and spice filled the air.

I continued my exploration at Sausage Tree Camp, another luxurious hideaway along the Zambezi. Days were filled with thrilling canoe safaris, guided walking tours, and boat trips, all offering incredible opportunities to witness the unique flora and fauna that call this region home. A great highlight was our lunch IN the Zambezi river and a barbecue dinner in the middle of the bush.

Victoria Falls: The Mighty Spectacle of Nature

Leaving the Lower Zambezi behind, I made my way to Victoria Falls, one of the most famous natural wonders in the world. Staying at Sindabezi Lodge and Tongabezi Lodge, I was treated to luxurious accommodations with unobstructed views of the Zambezi River.

The highlight of my visit to Victoria Falls was the once-in-a-lifetime experience of swimming in the Devil’s Pool on Livingstone Island. The rush of adrenaline as I dangled my arms over the edge, peering into the abyss of the falls, was truly unforgettable. The majesty and sheer power of Victoria Falls left me in awe, and the thundering sound of the water crashing down was a symphony of nature at its finest.
