St. Kitts’ sister island, Nevis – known as the Queen of the Caribbees – makes for a great day trip, with a regular public, car ferry and private water taxi services linking the two islands.

The water taxi is the quickest link to travel between both islands. Zip across the two-mile channel in just six minutes from Reggae Beach on the South-East peninsula of St. Kitts, and arrive in Nevis at Oualie Beach.  https://nevisisland.com/getting-to-nevis-by-sea/

The hourly public ferry operates between Basseterre in St. Kitts and Charlestown in Nevis and takes 50 minutes.

For those who want to take a car across, there’s also the option of the Sea Bridge Car Ferry service which sails between Major’s Bay on the South East Peninsula on St. Kitts and Cades Bay, Nevis.  It is a 20-minute journey.

Nevis’ pretty capital Charlestown is around a tenth of the size of Basseterre.  Two museums worth a visit are dedicated to Lord Horatio Nelson (who married Fanny Nisbet on the beautiful Montpelier Estate) and Alexander Hamilton, born on Nevis in 1757.  Hamilton later became the Secretary of United States Treasury and is still pictured on a US $10 note. His birthplace is the Museum of Nevis History.

Other sites worth a visit include the Nevisian Heritage Village, the Bath Hotel – the first hotel built in the Caribbean in 1778 – Bath Stream and Spring House, Government House and several churches, especially the 1643-built St. Thomas’ Anglican Church.

Last, but far from least, a drink at the famous Sunshine’s Bar is a must for everyone, including the many celebrities whose pictures grace the walls.
