Fairway Elegance, a Luxurious Golfing Odyssey aboard Rovos Rail

This safari travels the northeastern reaches of South Africa and will entertain the most discerning golfers with a delightful itinerary for non-playing guests. Travel from Pretoria to Sun City in the hills of the Pilanesberg for game viewing. The Fairway Elegance tour will take you cross the spectacular Drakensberg Mountains to Spionkop, the perfect base for exploring the mountains, bush, birds and battlefields of the region. During the Fairway Elegance you traverse the scenic Valley of a Thousand Hills to Durban for a tour of the city and botanical gardens. Interact with artisans as they create highly decorative and geometric-shaped candles. The game viewing continues at Hluhluwe in Zululand (one of the oldest reserves in the country) and the world-famous Kruger Park in Malelane with a visit to the Kingdom of eSwatini. See Dullstoom’s arts and crafts and enjoy a presentation on flyfishing and an introduction to whisky after which this memorable journey ends in Pretoria.

Your Itinerary

Pilanesberg

Day 1 - Pretoria

Time to board the train, settle in and freshen up, before you meet your fellow travellers. While having lunch in one of the beautiful authentic dining cars, the train travels direction Rustenburg.

The old town of Rustenburg grew as the church and administrative centre for a rich farming area. It is here, in the centre of a volcanic valley surrounded by the dun slopes of the Pilanesberg Mountains, a wilderness wonderland rises from the dust, the fantastical Sun City Resort.

Day 2 - Pilanesberg & Gary Player at Lost City

For the golfers, today after breakfast in the train, you will have transfer (±60 min) to Sun City’s Gary Player/ Lost City Golf Course for tee off and lunch.

Enjoy an afternoon of golfing and leisure.

The non-playing guests will have a morning game drive in the Pilanesberg Reserve. After the game drive you will have lunch with the golfers.

The afternoon is at leisure at Lost City’s Sun City.

Day 3 - Leisure on board

Today  is a day at leisure and give you a great opportunity to enjoy the train. All meals enjoyed on board en route to Ladysmith.

Todays dresscode is  “Africa” Theme or Smart Casual

The train climbs to Majuba Hill – site of the decisive battle that ended the First Anglo Boer War – then passes Newcastle, which has what is reputed to be the largest cella-dome Hindu temple in the southern hemisphere, and Glencoe, site of the first battle of the Anglo Boer War and now the centre of the province’s coalfields.

Day 4 - Spionkop & Champagne Sports

Today a transfer (±60 min) will take the golfers to Champagne Sports Resort for tee off and lunch, before you return to the train.

The non-playing guests have a transfer (±30 min) to Spionkop Lodge is arranged. Here you can hear the historic tale of the Battle of Spionkop and lunch will be served here.

Afternoon game drive in the 11.000-acre reserve or relax at the lodge, before returning to the train in the late afternoon.

Day 5 - Durban & Durban Country Club, Edgecombe or Cotswold

Today a transfer will take you to one of three golf courts you can chose from:

Durban Country Club (±15 min) or

Mt Edgecombe (±20 min) or

Cotswold Downs(±30 min) for tee off and lunch.

In the afternoon tea is served in the lounge and observation cars.

The non-playing guests enjoy a Durban city tour, a visit to the botanical gardens and lunch at Umhlanga’s beachfront with an afternoon at leisure, before meeting up with the rest for a tea in the lounge.

Day 6 - African Wildlife

Time to enjoy the African bush all together!

A transfer will take you to Hluhluwe for a game drive. As the oldest proclaimed reserve in Africa, Hluhluwe consists 960km2 of hilly topography and is known for its rich wildlife and conservation efforts.
Return to the train and have lunch, while the train travels towards eSwatini.

Day 7 - Eswatini & the Royal Swazi Sun

After breakfast it is time for some golf at the Royal Swazi. Enjoy tee off and lunch here, before you return to the train.

As soon as all are on board, the train depart for Komatipoort and back to South Africa.

The non-playing guests have an early transfer (±60 min) to Mkhaya Reserve for a game drive. After the game drive a 90 minute transfer will take you to Swazi Candles for a visit with lunch and an opportunity for curio shopping. Afterwards you will be transferred to Royal Swazi to join the golfers AND/OR return to the train.

Day 8 - Kruger Park & Leopards Creek

Today you will enjoy a game drive in the Kruger National park with lunch included. Afterwards there is some time for curio shopping.

If available, golf at Leopard Creek may be booked on request for your own account

Day 9 - Dullstroom & Highland Gate

Today the golfers will have a transfer (±40 min) to Highland Gate for tee off and lunch.

The non-playing guests enjoy a presentation on flyfishing followed by lunch at Walkerson’s Hotel. Return to Dullstroom for an introduction to whisky distilling and a tour of the Arts & Crafts Centre.

Day 10 - Time to say goodbye ...

A last breakfast is served in the dining cars, before the train arrives at journey’s end at Rovos Rail Station in Pretoria at around 10am.
