North East Brazil hidden beaches

When you think of Brazil one of the first things you associate with the country is sunshine and beaches. There are so many Brazilian destinations to choose from if you are beach lover! However, some might have become too frequented for the discerning traveller. This itinerary is the perfect answer to discover a slice of paradise still little known and travelled. Of course you will visit Rio, but you will stay on Ipanema beach, much calmer and refined than Copacabana beach, before travelling to the north east of the country in search of that perfect beach setting around Natal and char, one of Brazil’s best kept secrets!

Your Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Rio

Land in Rio de Janeiro where you will be met by your driver and English speaking guide who will take you by private car to your hotel. If you land in the day time, enjoy a walk along Ipanema beach and on Arpoador hill.

Day 2 - Guided hiking of Rio’s wild beaches, Prainha and Grumari

Prainha and Grumari beaches are located in an environmental preservation area in Rio de Janeiro. Differently from the urban beaches, here you will not see buildings or large avenues, but the lush vegetation of the surrounding mountains. This tour departs from the hotel and passes through Reserva beach and Marapendi Lagoon to stop at Chico Mendes Park, where it is possible to see animals and visit the biological project about the protection of species and their natural habitat. Afterwards you will go to Prainha to do 1,5 hours hike to Caeté summit that reveals an amazing view of the coast and the mountains of Rio. The next stop is Grumari where you will be able to stop and enjoy the lush tropical beach.

Day 3 - Tour of Corcovado and Sugarloaf

One of the Seven Wonders of the World, the magnificent Christ the Redeemer, the iconic statue on top of Corcovado Hill, is Rio’s most famous landmark. The Corcovado Hill is part of the Tijuca Forest, the largest urban forest in the world. This morning you will be picked up by your guide and taken on a tour of this wonderful site. Once on the top of Corcovado Hill, you will be able to admire breath taking views of Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and the Botanical Gardens. On this tour you will also visit the famous Pão de Açúcar (Sugarloaf Mountain), another iconic symbol of the city. Its name was given due to the resemblance to the traditional shape of a refined sugar loaf. You will take two glass cable cars to reach the top and from here you will have amazing 360 degree views of the whole city.

Day 4 - Fly to Natal

This morning you will be picked up at your hotel and driven by private car to the airport for your flight to Natal, in the North East of the country. Once landed you will be met and taken by private transfer to your hotel. You can then enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 5 - Natal and Pipa beach tour (5 hours)

The dazzling Pipa, known by foreigners as Pipa Brazil, is 80 kms from Natal and has stunning landscapes composed by cliffs, white sand and clear sea. There are pretty beaches with either big waves or calm water, side by side, which makes it a perfect destination choice to everyone who enjoys swimming or water sports. The beaches are surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, forests, mangroves, lagoons and dunes that provide relaxing and exciting experiences. If you are lucky, you could spot dolphins and sea turtles.

This tour starts in Natal, passing by the city of Goianinha and Tibau do Sul where you can see the beautiful lagoon meeting the sea and the high cliffs. Once in Pipa, you will have some free time to appreciate its beaches, walk around the village and visit the Amor Beach and the red high Chapadão cliff. You can choose to add some optional activities like a boat ride to see dolphins, hike in the ecological sanctuary of Pipa or buggy  rides on the dunes (these are not included).

Day 6 - Maracajaú Beach tour (8 hours)

One of the best places to dive in Brazil, Maracajaú Beach offers crystal waters and coral reefs. Close by is Punaú beach, another wonderful site with stunning natural landscapes, dunes, coconut trees and rivers, perfect for buggy rides and the practice of kayaking. The tour will take you from Natal to Maracajaú where you will take a boat ride to the reefs and will be able to snorkel or scuba dive (at an additional cost) in the colourful coral reefs and enjoy the day in the sun. It will also take you to Punaú where you can choose to add some of the fun activities on offer.

Day 7 - At leisure in Natal

After all the adventures of the past few days, enjoy a full day at leisure!

Day 8 - Land transfer to São Miguel do Gostoso

Today you will be taken by private car to São Miguel do Gostoso, a town in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, 112 km from Natal. It is known for being a quiet place with several beaches, dunes, lagoons, regional and international gastronomy. It has about 10 thousand inhabitants and preserves its fishermen’s culture. It hangs on to the simplicity of old school living thus maintaining a wonderful charm about it.

Day 9 - Expedition Galinhos

The expedition starts early in the morning with the departure from the Pousada and a drive towards the north. You will pass paradisiacal beaches like Praia do Marco, where the Portuguese arrived to Brazil for the first time. You will drive on dune parks spreading across the vastness of the landscape. You will be travelling in a jeep to make the most of this adventure. You will arrive at Galinhos, a peninsula of dunes extending into the sea. Here you will stop for a swim and to contemplate the beauty of the region. After this restful time, you will take a boat ride into the mangroves to appreciate the wonderful beauty and wildlife. For a lunch with a difference, you will enjoy it the dunes!

Day 10 - Expedition Pititinga

The expedition starts in the morning, leaving the Pousada towards the south coast, Pititinga. There are 60 kilometres of dreamy beaches, and during low tide the coast turns into large sand corridors interspersed with cliffs, dunes and reefs. The forest ranges from coconut trees to large cactus pastures and bromeliads. You will be travelling in the comfort of a jeep as the path is off-road. In Pititinga, you will relax on hammocks suspended on the water and will have lunch. In the afternoon you will have another adventure driving on the dunes before travelling back to São Miguel do Gostoso.

Day 11 - Day at leisure

Enjoy this full day to relax and rest after all the adventures of the past few days!

Day 12 - Departure

After having discovered a little known slice of Brazilian paradise, it is time to go onto your new destination. We have included a private transfer to Natal airport for your onward flight.

Please note: In the Northeast of Brazil the level of English is still not very good so bear this in mind when considering travelling there. This itinerary is also perfect for a self-drive holiday in Brazil’s North East.

Rio de Janeiro
