THAILAND

Thailand’s breathtaking landscapes and vibrant culture have captivated filmmakers and audiences alike. In “The Beach” (2000), starring Leonardo DiCaprio, viewers are whisked away to the idyllic Koh Phi Phi islands, immersing themselves in themes of paradise and utopia. Since its release, this stunning beach has drawn countless visitors eager to find their own slice of heaven, often overlooking other equally gorgeous and serene shores nearby.

Another cinematic gem is James Bond Island, officially known as Koh Tapu, which shot to fame after its appearance in the 1974 classic “The Man with the Golden Gun,” featuring Roger Moore. Nestled in Phang Nga Bay, this island boasts dramatic limestone cliffs and mesmerizing emerald waters, making it a must-visit for both movie lovers and nature enthusiasts.

Additionally, “Anna and the King” (1999), starring Jodie Foster and Chow Yun-fat, tells the compelling story of Anna Leonowens, a governess for the King of Siam. The film beautifully captures Thailand’s rich history and stunning landscapes, exploring cultural clashes and romance in a truly unforgettable setting.

EGYPT

Ancient Egypt is one of the most fascinating civilizations in history, captivating the imagination with its rich culture, majestic pyramids, and intriguing mysteries. This unique blend of history and allure provides a stunning backdrop for both contemporary and historical films.

Classics like “Cleopatra” (1963), starring Elizabeth Taylor, not only showcase the grandeur of ancient royalty but also highlight the lavish settings that Egypt offers. Iconic James Bond films, such as “The Spy Who Loved Me” (1977), thrill audiences with action sequences set against the striking landscapes of the pyramids.

Modern adventures like “The Mummy” (1999) bring ancient myths and legends to life, while the recent “Death on the Nile” (2022) serves as a modern adaptation of Agatha Christie’s classic, combining mystery with the breathtaking backdrop of the Nile. Egypt’s cinematic charm continues to inspire filmmakers, making it a popular choice for those looking to blend history with captivating storytelling.

SINGAPORE

Rumours abound that the follow-up to Crazy Rich Asians will film in 2025 and while it might be set more in China than Singapore, we’d be surprised if there aren’t at least a few scenes of the cosmopolitan city-state. If you saw the first one, then you know the beautiful backdrop the nation provides.

We might not be able to get you into a secret mansion in the heart of the jungle or a chartered cargo ship reached by helicopter, we can show you almost everywhere in Singapore and Langkawi that appears in the first film. Bustling hawker centres where locals feast, elegant suites of The Raffles Hotel [https://www.fleewinter.com/stays/raffles_hotel/], gardens filled with orchids, colourful shophouses of Chinatown and Emerald Hill, even a mahjong parlor if you’re keen.

If it’s the beaches in the movie that call to you, it’s Malaysia you’ll want to visit. The fictional private island where the women flew for a weekend was filmed in Langkawi. And if budget is no object, we may be able to help with that helicopter, chartered boat, and some pretty incredible islands…

BORNEO

Borneo has long been a favourite of documentarian Sir David Attenborough, appearing in countless programmes over the years. It’s no wonder as this land is rich in wildlife, from the tiniest orchids to the critically endangered Bornean rhinoceros. Dame Judi Dench’s Wild Borneo Adventure brought more to the screen as she encountered everything from dung beetles to crocodiles.

Yet it isn’t only wildlife that makes Borneo a cinematic inspiration. Sir James Brooke, the White Rajah who dedicated his life to bringing peace, uniting tribes, and ending the headhunting wars of the tribes of Sarawak is a true story that feels like fiction. Edge of the World brought the legend to life and, filmed in Borneo, the jungle itself is its own character.

Released earlier this year, the animated film Savages tells the story of an orphaned orangutan, a young girl, and the challenges humanity creates for our environment and its original residents.

Whether it’s history, flora, fauna, or thought-provoking family-friendly entertainment, there’s a Borneo programme or film that will have you wondering when the next flight departs. To see it all in person, you’ll need a tailor-made version of our Grand Tour.

Other gems include the animation Rio (2011) or for action enthusiasts, Fast Five (2011) and Moonraker (1979) have some exhilarating scenes set in the Cidade Maravilhosa.

ARGENTINA

For the dramatic landscapes of Patagonia, On the road (2012) and The motorcycle diaries (2004) showcase the natural beauty of this region.

The Andes mountains, a beautiful capital city and the rich culture of the Argentine people, are the perfect choice for movie makers, and a wonderful setting for your own holiday.

JAPAN

Japan has mesmerized filmmakers and audiences alike, featuring in a variety of acclaimed movies that showcase its unique culture and breathtaking landscapes. In “Lost in Translation” (2003), viewers are immersed in the vibrant life of Tokyo through the eyes of two Americans, beautifully highlighting the contrast between the city’s rich traditions and its modern energy. SAILING

On a luxury sailing yacht in Greece it is easy to feel like you’re the lead in your very own box office smash. Following in the footsteps (or wake) of James Bond, Captain Corelli, The Durrell’s and erm Below Deck…

Kalami Bay is one of our favourite stops in the North of Corfu and the location of Sir Roger Moore’s ‘For Your Eyes Only’. The bay serves as an epic backdrop to 007 shenanigans and in the background The White House taverna can be spotted. Interestingly this is also the real-life house of The Durrell’s, which was also filmed in various locations on Corfu including just outside Gouvia Marina.

If you are on one of our South Ionian itineraries visit the stunning island of Kefalonia where Captain Corelli’s Mandolin was filmed in locations such as Agia Effimia, Anti-Samos, Myrtos Beach and Argostoli. A romantic background for a movie classic.

Let’s also just have a quick shout out to Jacob Elordi’s T-Shirt in the film Saltburn which famously says, ‘What Happens in Kassiopi stays in Kassiopi’.

Whether you’re on an adventure like Bond or falling in love like Captain Corelli, be shaken and stirred on your own boating blockbuster.

TURKEY

A visit to incredible Cappadocia is a must, and one of the most beautiful (and luxurious!) hotels in the region is Argos in Cappadocia. Recently shown on the BBC’s excellent series Amazing Hotels: Life Beyond the Lobby with Rob Rinder and Monica Galetti, the programme gives you a real insight into this gorgeous hotel and of course, this stunning and utterly unique destination in central Turkey.

A stay at Argos in Cappadocia is an unforgettable experience, with 71 individual cave rooms and suites, first-class service, fine-dining restaurants, one of the best spas we’ve ever seen and the most incredible views, you simply won’t want to leave…

We highly recommend a stay in Cappadocia combined with a few nights in vibrant Istanbul, a fabulous twin centred holiday at any time of year.
