It’s time to get back to Sri Lanka

By Carly Watling on 21st June, 2023

People are returning to Sri Lanka for their holidays and it’s making us do a little happy dance.

Remember, at Fleewinter, the specialist you speak to about a trip knows the destination deeply. We’ve built up our recommendations of hotels and activities from personal experiences and we hand select who we partner with to deliver your trip.

So the last few years seeing our destinations struggle has been difficult, and Sri Lanka has had some especially hard years.

But you may remember… Sri Lanka was named Lonely Planet’s top country to travel to in 2019. (just before world travel closed for a while….humph)

And hotels across the small island feature constantly in awards for luxury, style and service. Add this to the fact the island is so varied – with ancient cultural spots to explore, lush natural parks, hiking trails and miles of wide sandy beaches – and it’s easy to see why Sri Lanka won that coveted prize, and deserves to make it onto your travel bucket list.

So, why now?

I think it’s fair to say that Sri Lanka is still in recovery mode. With some political and economic challenges taking place in the background and the shadow of the pandemic barely behind us, there is a real appetite to see travel recover and it has felt like a sluggish walk to get there rather than a sprint. I’m writing this in June 2023, and a few years ago if you had called me at this time of year and asked about a villa at Christmas I’d have been having to disappoint you.. And actually there are still some good options around right now.

It’s understandable that some of the news coverage has given potential visitors pause and perhaps put off Sri Lanka for another year or so, to give it a little longer to recover. But the political protests have been very localised to the capital and government buildings (which we really never send anyone to anyway) and all local reports and personal experiences tell us tourists will have no issue getting anything they need.

And in my option, the slightly quieter vibe over there at the moment is worth taking advantage of. No need to take my word for it, check out these comments from recent visitors to Sri Lanka.

Give us a call to discuss any questions or concern you may have!

“Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful and so happy we were visiting their country again. It really highlighted how important tourism is and it is the best time to visit the country to not only visit it as an amazing destination but to help in bringing work and tourism back to the country”.

“Locals can’t wait for tourism to be back in full swing and love welcoming people to their beautiful country. I felt happy to be spending money to help the economy bounce back and support local people. Would definitely recommend to a friend and after doing Adam’s Peak and spending time on the West and Southern beaches this time I can’t wait to explore the East Coast next”

“Possibly the best holiday we’ve had – exciting, smooth, relaxing – exactly what we wanted”

“Either country is amazing standalone – but Sri Lanka and the Maldives are such an addictive pairing. 10 days exploring the highlights of Sri Lanka hits culture, wildlife, breathtaking scenery and incredible food at a good pace, and then you can wind down with a few nights of luxury on the most perfect beaches in the world” – Carly, Asia Specialist
