Punta del Este is undoubtedly one of the most famous and upmarket resort towns not just in Uruguay but in the whole of the continent. This is where wealthy South Americans go to in order to be seen and to mingle with celebrities. It still has a charm so do not be put off, but we do suggest to avoid it in the summer months as it does get very busy.
It is worth seeing as it is another side of the coin of Uruguay’s culture and if you do love high end hotels, restaurant and boutiques, this is the place for you. If, on the other hand, you prefer a more laid back vibe, La Barra or even Jose Ignacio, a bit further along the coastline, might be the better option for you.
