Uruguay is a relatively small country compared to the ‘giants’ that lie next to it. It is perfectly wedged in between Argentina and Brazil and in fact, it shares a lot of cultural similarities with the former: the drinking of mate, the asados, and a wine culture to name a few. Spanish is the first language and even the accent is very similar to the Argentine.
However, it is its own country and Uruguayan are very proud of their heritage. They are also some of friendliest people in the South American continent and the whole country is also one of the most stable and safe.
What we love about holidaying in Uruguay is that you can visit the country by land, no need to take any domestic flights, which is an advantage, so you won’t miss a thing and you will also save time and money. It is also perfect for self-drive if you want to be more independent, car journeys are not too long and you will be able to tailor the holiday to the pace that is just right for you.
The capital is cosmopolitan and full of charm, the colonial towns are full of history and beauty, the countryside is stunning, and the coastline is a mixture of high end resorts or small fishermen’s villages.
Uruguay deserves to be visited on its own, especially if it is not your first time to South America, but if you want to maximise your time, it is perfect combined with Argentina. A short ferry ride from Buenos Aires will take you to either Colonia or Montevideo, and from here you can start your Uruguayan adventure!
