Top 10 reasons to visit Patagonia in April

By Val Garibotti on 28th February, 2024

For me, Patagonia is at its best in April and here is why…

Patagonia is mesmerising all year round, and every season brings distinct characteristics and experiences. The first time I travelled there, was in early April and I cannot recommend this time of year enough. It is the beginning of autumn, and as the region is transitioning from the summer, the weather is perfect to enjoy a plethora of outdoor activities.

So here is my top 10 why you should consider a trip to wonderful Patagonia in April!

1. Fewer Crowds means…

Patagonia is a popular destination, especially during the summer months. Traveling in autumn means encountering fewer tourists, providing a more intimate and serene experience.

Trails and attractions are likely to be less crowded, allowing for a more immersive connection with nature.

2. …cheaper prices!

Let’s face it, Patagonia can be an expensive destination, but come April, accommodation and services prices come dramatically down.

This is particularly true of the lodges in some of the famous national parks like Torres del Paine. They offer truly unforgettable and once in your life experiences and in April, you can enjoy this at a fraction of the high season’s price. So you can treat yourself without breaking the bank.

3. Mild Weather

Patagonian weather can be unpredictable throughout the year, even in summer. Sometimes you can experience the four seasons in one day!

Autumn, especially early April, brings temperatures that are still mild, making it a comfortable time to explore the region. The days are generally pleasant and you still have plenty of hours of daylight, allowing for outdoor activities such as hiking and wildlife viewing.

4. Beautiful autumn colours

Autumn in Patagonia transforms the landscapes into a vibrant display of warm colours. The beech trees and lenga forests, particularly in the lake region, turn shades of red, orange, and gold, creating a picturesque backdrop against the dramatic mountainous terrain.

5. Unique Wildlife Encounters

Autumn is a prime time for wildlife sightings in Patagonia. Many animals, such as guanacos, foxes, and condors, are more active during this season. Additionally, it’s the time when some migratory bird species return to the region, adding to the overall biodiversity.

And if you’ve got your heart set on meeting some of Patagonia’s more elusive birds or beasts, April is a great time to increase your chances as the region’s shier animals are more likely to break cover as soon as the daily footfall of visitors decreases.

6. Glacial Landscapes

While winter brings its own beauty with snow-covered landscapes, autumn allows travellers to witness the glaciers and ice fields in a different light.

The contrast between the icy blue hues and the warm autumnal colours creates a stunning visual spectacle.

7. Photographic Opportunities

The soft, golden light of autumn enhances the already awe-inspiring scenery, making it a photographer’s paradise.

The changing colours, along with the clear skies typical of this season, provide excellent conditions for capturing the beauty of Patagonia.

8. Great hiking conditions

Let’s face it, Patagonia is a hiker’s dream, and April provides favourable conditions for trekking. The trails are generally well-maintained, and the cooler temperatures make it more comfortable for extended hikes.

April offers the opportunity to engage in specific activities, such as trekking through the colourful landscapes, enjoying boat trips surrounded by the fall foliage, and experiencing the local culture during the harvest season.

9. Culinary Delights

Patagonian cuisine is influenced by its natural surroundings. April is the end of the harvest season in Patagonia and traveling in this month allows you to savour seasonal ingredients and specialties.

Local markets may showcase fresh produce, and you can indulge in traditional dishes by the warmth of a crackling fire.

The Patagonian Asado is world famous, and if you are vegetarian, you can still enjoy plenty of veggie variations.

10. Aurora Australis

While not as prominent as in polar regions, there is a chance to witness the Southern Lights, or Aurora Australis, in the southern reaches of Patagonia.

April, with its longer nights and clearer skies, provides a better opportunity for observing this mesmerising natural phenomenon.
