Nurata Mountain Trek, Uzbekistan

By Nigel Fisher on 29th January, 2024

Uzbekistan is not just about classical sites, and offers desert safaris, trekking, bird watching and local encounters. South of Samarkand is the stunning Nuratau Nature Reserve, where you spend 3 days trekking from village to village, whilst staying in local guesthouse and learning about local customs and traditions and see the endangered Severtzov sheep. In the evenings you can make traditional bread making and help cook dinner with the local family. Nuratau Nature Reserve is situated in the Nurafshan Mountains and is a great destination for those interested in birds as it is home for over 160 species of birds, including rare black vultures.

Our Alternative Uzbekistan 14 day comprehensive tour goes way beyond the usual sights of this fascinating country and is perfect for those interested in trekking and cultural sites. Walking in the Nuratau Mountains and camping in the desert in a traditional yurt is a highlight to your Silk Road journey.

Top Travel Tip

“Central Asia is one of the last frontiers to be explored. The remoteness of this landlocked region and the beauty of the Steppe landscape make it a unique place to visit. Out of all the Five Stans to visit, a good place to start is with a tour to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to see the historical sites and stunning mountain scenery.” – Nigel, Central Asia Specialist
