What pops to mind when we say the words ‘European Summer?’
It’s Greece. It’s ABBA. It’s Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, and islands bathed in blue waters with dark green mountains in the distance, the smell of fresh food wafting gently on the air.
It’s achingly ancient history juxtaposed with new cosmopolitan towns. It’s the weaving of bobbin-lace by wrinkled yia-yias in Church doorways, and it’s coffee culture.

& with good reason.
The Greek spirit of ‘Filoxenia’ is famed.
The Greeks are hospitable, wonderful people. The food is some of the best in the world. The beaches are paradise and the mountains offer lush green peaks, contrasting with the coast.
The history is about as rich as it’s possible to get: this is the land of Athenian democracy and one of the birthplaces of our modern society.

And honestly, we’re in total agreement.
It’s hard to beat the incredible variation this island has to offer, with none of the fuss of the busier Cyclades.
Lie on a white sand beach, only accessed by foot or by boat. Wander through the streets of picturesque Fiskardo, celebrity-spotting. Head to postcard-perfect Assos, on the western edge of the island and watch the sun go down behind the castle on the hill.

Take care of the admin: all you need to do is explore.
I’ve been travelling to Greece for decades, and it’s one of those places that, despite the size of the world, I always seem to end up back on the islands. It’s the equivalent of slipping into your favourite jacket: everything about it is home. Corfu Town and Kefalonia are my favourite places to visit – who couldn’t love that mixing pot of cultural influence and gorgeous Ionian vistas!
I also plan holidays to Turkey…and its so easy to combine a stay in the 2 countries, whether you pop over for a day trip or spend a few nights in each – it’s a fabulous twin centred stay!
