Thinking about going to Turkey?

By Charlotte Wates on 15th August, 2024

If you’re thinking about going to Turkey, you need to know the essentials.

Turkey is one of those must-see destinations with the added benefit of being pretty much on the doorstep.  But what do you need to know, if you’re thinking about going to Turkey?

Turkey in a nutshell

Fantastic climate, dramatic scenery, friendly locals, and some of the best cuisine you’ll ever taste…

Turkey offers something for everyone – walk through history in the vibrant streets of Istanbul, test your haggling skills in the colourful Grand Bazaar and visit the iconic and impressive Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia in Sultanahmet.

Stunning Scenery: From the sun-drenched beaches of the Turquoise Coast to the otherworldly rock formations and underground cities of Cappadocia, Turkey’s landscape is diverse and utterly beautiful.

Turkish cuisine: A feast for the senses. Savour mouthwatering dishes, from the colourful mezes, to succulent kebabs finished off with delicate baklava, each bite a tribute to the country’s rich culinary heritage.

When to visit Turkey

Turkey is not just a summer destination – between November and February Istanbul and Cappadocia are great places to visit, you may have to wrap up warm but these quieter times are perfect for exploring.

Pick up some Christmas presents from the bazaars in colourful Istanbul, or stay in a unique cave hotel in Cappadocia – head out and discover the amazing natural beauty of this region with its unique fairy chimneys and fascinating landscape, made only more magical with a dusting of snow.

March and April – Spring is just gorgeous in Turkey, it’s starting to warm up and flowers are popping up all over the place, a perfect time to enjoy some gentle hiking.

May to October – Summer is here!  The coastal resorts are fully open and the locals are ready to welcome you with open arms.  Whether you fancy a luxury villa with infinity pool overlooking the turquoise Med, a rural mountain retreat, a boutique hotel, or a luxury cruise on board a traditional gulet, this is the time to do it!

I’m thinking about going to Turkey, where should I go?

Turkey is a vast country so it can be hard to choose where to go.

If you are a culture vulture then head to Istanbul, for sun seekers, the beautiful south-west coast is where to spend lazy days by your pool or on one the beautiful beaches.

For water babies, why not rent your own private gulet and spend days jumping in and out of the crystal-clear Med trying out the many toys available on board such as paddle boards, water skis and kayaks.  For history buffs, the remarkable frescoes in the old caves and churches of Cappadocia are awe-inspiring and the imposing, monumental ruins of Ephesus are on many a bucket-list.

Despite being such a huge country, there are many short internal flights making it simple to get from A to B, and you can see a remarkable amount of the country in as little as two weeks.

Romantic Luxury in Ancient Turkey

You want: a romantic escape with culture and local experiences

Basing yourself on the beautiful Bodrum Peninsula, this is a great point to visit ancient Ephesus, visit a vineyard for some local wine-tasting, visit the cotton-castles of Pamukkale as well as enjoy some well-deserved RnR…

Mystical Cappadocia and Coast

You love: exploring and some RnR

This 10 night itinerary includes 3 nights discovering the other-worldly landscape of Cappadocia, before heading to your own private villa with pool in the gorgeous seaside town of Kalkan, on the south-west coast.  The perfect combo of exploration and relaxation!

Getting there

Only a 4 hour hop from the UK, Turkey is very easy to reach with plenty of daily flights to Istanbul and the coast. Flights to coastal areas are regular, and there are increased flights in the summer season.

If you wish to explore further afield, Turkish Airlines offer daily regional flights.

Getting Around

We tend to include private transfers for our holidays to Turkey, but of course if you want to explore independently, we can arrange car hire so you can discover the many off the beaten track villages and beaches.

Another way of getting around is of course, arranging a splendid stay on board a gulet!

Travel Essentials

Travelling with kids – You’ll find Turks to be a kid friendly bunch, even in evenings in most restaurants However, be aware that facilities such as highchairs and baby changing facilities are inconsistent, or more likely absent. Children’s menus aren’t common but you can speak to your waiter and they may offer special options for children.

Money – Turkish Lira, which you can get in advance or on arrival in easily available ATMs.  Better rates tend to be available locally.   Credit and Debit cards are widely accepted but as always when visiting a rural area plan ahead.

Dress Code – Turkey is predominantly Muslim but very tolerant to tourism. In Istanbul and the coastal towns, there are no dress concerns. However, it is respectful to dress modestly in more local areas and always cover your head, knees and shoulders when entering mosques. It is frowned upon for ladies to sunbathe anywhere topless.

Passports and Visas – Your passport should have 6 months validity left from the date you are leaving Turkey
Visas for 90 days stay for holiday purposes are not usually required for UK and European visitors however you can check the most current advice and apply easily at www.evisa.gov.tr

Time – Turkey is 2 hours ahead of the UK on British Summer Time and 3 hours ahead of the UK in the winter months

Tipping – Around 10-15% is customary in restaurants, hotels and taxis.

Some final thoughts from Charlotte

You will find (like me!) after your first visit to Turkey you will want to return time and time again.

Steeped in history, a fascinating culture, blessed with a wonderful warm climate, amazing food and wine, and so many places to explore, Turkey is a remarkable short-haul destination for all the family.

Like with most destinations, there are places to avoid, as with all of our Fleewinter destinations, we have hand-picked the very best spots to avoid mass tourism and would love you to experience the Turkey Charlotte knows and loves…
