The International Wild Flower Festival runs from the 27th of May to the 12th of June in Bohinj and is the perfect excuse to visit Slovenia. Located in Triglav National Park, Bohinj Valley with its lake is one of the most stunning areas in Slovenia. Lake Bohinj is the largest lake in Slovenia, and its crystal-clear emerald water is perfect for a refreshing swim in the summer. Surrounded by the Julian Alps, Bohinj Valley is a great starting point for outdoor adventures such as hiking, cycling, kayaking and skiing.
The true star of the show is the display of wildflowers in the Alpine meadows. The symbol for the festival is the Iris of Bohinj, which turn large swaths of land a vibrant purple. Visitors can also expect to see large blooms of orchids, lilies, edelweiss, and much more. Throughout the festival, there are daily walks and workshops. On these walks, local guides will point out the 70 types of flowers endemic to this Slovenian region, while providing knowledge about the national park. Beautiful Lake Bohinj has plenty of activities to enjoy. Take a boat excursion to really enjoy this area or hire a kayak.
Walkers will enjoy the sheer pleasure of walking around the lake which usually takes anything from two to four hours. Savica waterfall is close by and worth a visit even after climbing the 500 steps. Take the cable car up to the top of Mount Vogel the views are fantastic. For those that prefer two wheels there are plenty of marked bicycle trails and you can hire bikes.
Children (and adults) will love the Zlatorog Fairy Trail, where you get take a guided tour (or explore yourself) and listen to local fairy tales with lots of fun activities at each stop.
