With more than 10,000 kilometres of marked trails, Slovenia is a haven for hiking in Europe. There’s something for everyone: adrenalin-inducing peak climbs, family-friendly valley walks, and breath-taking hikes to glacial lakes, epic waterfalls and alpine pastures.
There are plenty of amazing hiking regions in Slovenia, including the mountainous Julian Alps, the Kamnik and Savinja Alps and the Karavanke Alps. From the beauty of Lake Bled and Triglav National Park to the lesser known rivers of the Soča Valley and landscapes of Koroška, Zasavje and Logar, the variety of Slovenia really is hard to match
The Julian Alps, home to Slovenia’s highest peaks, is the most famous range. Stretching from Northeastern Italy into Northwestern Slovenia, it’s not the highest range in Europe, but it’s certainly one of the most spectacular. You can explore these mountains from many different towns and villages, including Kranjska Gora, Kobarid, Bovec, Bohinj and Bled.
it’s been easier to get to know this region thanks to the creation of the Juliana Trail. The 270km circuit winds through the foothills of the Julian Alps over 16 stages. Along the way, you’ll be treated to spectacular landscapes of towering peaks, waterfalls, rushing rivers and pristine mountain lakes.
The Kamnik-Savinja Alps are equally spectacular, yet often overlooked. The most well-known hiking destinations in the Kamnik Alps are probably Logar Valley and Velika Planina.
The Karawanks are the least visited range among international hikers, as most trailheads are only accessible by car. Though not as dramatic as the other Slovenian mountains, the Karawanks are nonetheless great for more offbeat adventures.
