Miyajima Island is a small sacred island, has been a holy place of Shintoism since the earliest times. Here you will find the most photographed site in Japan – the Floating Torii Gate, designated as one of Japan’s “Three Most Beautiful Views”. The island has many other beautiful temples and shrines and have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the past mere “commoners” were not allowed to set foot on this holy place, and even now it is forbidden to give birth or die on the island!
You no longer have to admire these breathtaking sights from afar as we take you out onto the water in kayaks and up close to these instantly recognisable attractions. Under the guidance of a qualified English-speaking instructor we paddle around Miyajima Island in Hiroshima, before approaching the ‘floating’ Torii gate to paddle through the middle of it.
Make your own way to the meeting spot and please bring a change of clothes, a towel, flip flop sandals or sneakers that can get wet, and if you need it sun hat, sunglasses or sun protection. This tour is operated in rainy weather, so please dress appropriately. However, on stormy days or high-wind days, the tour may be cancelled.
No prior kayaking experience required.
Appropriate Travel Insurance cover is recommended for this tour.
Note: The big gate (great Torii) at Itsukushima shrine in Miyajima is currently under restoration from June 2019 and unknown when it will be completed (it takes 1 year at least).
