As a tour operator, it’s crucial to experience the destinations I recommend to clients. For this reason, my site inspection journey through Cape Town, the Winelands, the Garden Route, and an Eastern Cape safari provided invaluable insights. Here’s a detailed account of my trip:
My site inspection journey started with two nights at the Kloof Street Hotel in Cape Town. Its central location made it a perfect base to explore the city’s vibrant atmosphere. One of my favourite places was just around the corner, Kloof Street House. This is a great place for dinner and don’t miss out on their cocktails, they are fantastic!
On my way to Franschhoek, I visited the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden. I highly recommend this stunning garden, filled with breathtaking sculptures amidst beautiful landscapes. For lunch I met up with my friend and former colleague Anthea. We had a great time and delicious lunch at Babylonstoren/The Greenhouse, a must-visit for its fresh, farm-to-table cuisine.
My overnight stay at La Petite Ferme was exceptional. The rooms were fantastic, and the dinner at their restaurant was a culinary delight. The next night, I stayed at Franschhoek Boutique Hotel in the centre of town and in walking distance to the start of the Wine Tram as well as restaurants, shops and bars. The highlight of Franschhoek was undoubtedly the Wine Tram Tour. This tour offers an unforgettable wine-tasting experience amidst scenic vineyards – an activity you simply cannot miss.
I then travelled to Oudtshoorn for two nights at Berluda Farm House, an Ostrich working farm. The accommodation was cozy and charming, and the dinner at Buffelsdrift was delightful. The following morning, I visited the Cango Caves, a fascinating natural wonder with impressive limestone formations.
My next stop was Kanonkop House in Knysna for two nights. It’s not my first visit here and will not be the last either. This owner run place is very special and I love Mark and Adele. They invited me for a delicious fish and oyster meal, a true treat for seafood lovers.
I spent three nights visiting friends near Nature Valley/Plettenberg Bay. This part of the journey was a wonderful mix of relaxation and catching up with old friends. We met at a lodge 10 years ago, as the managing couple. We became close friends, and he was even the best man at our wedding in the Kruger National Park.
While staying here I visited the Birds of Eden and did a hike at Nature Valley
The safari leg of my trip took me to the Kwandwe Great Fish River Lodge for three nights. I conducted site inspections of all other Kwandwe properties, each offering unique and luxurious safari experiences. The service is outstanding here and the rooms are stunning.
I flew back to Cape Town for the final leg of my journey. I spent one night at Ocean View House in Camps Bay, a beautiful spot with stunning views. If you stay in Camps Bay, go for a sundowner drink at The Bungalow, a little outside Camps Bay with the most stunning views of the sun going down.
The highlight of my trip was the last stay at The Silo. This hotel is simply the most stunning place I’ve ever visited. I was so captivated by its beauty that I didn’t even leave the hotel. The late morning and afternoon spent at the rooftop pool, followed by lunch at the rooftop bar, were extraordinary experiences. The panoramic views from The Silo are breathtaking.
On my last morning, I visited the V&A Waterfront and the ZEITZ Museum, which is situated within The Silo building. The museum’s contemporary African art collection is impressive and a must-visit.
This trip was a perfect blend of luxury, nature, and culture. Each location offered unique experiences, from the vibrant city life of Cape Town to the serene beauty of the Winelands, the stunning coastal scenery of the Garden Route, and the exhilarating wildlife encounters on safari.
If you are seeking diverse and unforgettable experiences in South Africa, I am happy to put together a personalised itinerary, a treasure trove of highlights. Whether it’s the sophisticated art and wine culture of Franschhoek, the adventure and natural wonders of Oudtshoorn, the coastal charm of Knysna, the tranquillity of Nature Valley, or the luxurious safari at Kwandwe, there’s something for everyone. And ending the trip at The Silo is the ultimate indulgence, offering unparalleled luxury and stunning views that are sure to leave a lasting impression.
