Peru is a large country which could prove difficult to travel independently. We organise our tailor-made tours with all transfers included from the moment you land to your transfer back to the airport, to remove all logistical stress and planning out of your holiday. Some drives can be quite long due to the sheer size of the country but we will always plan these carefully in the itinerary and make the most out of the journey, as they are also incredibly beautiful and plenty to see along the way. Because these drives are longer it is cheaper to opt for a shared service. Here at Fleewinter we think the private transfers are much more comfortable as you can stop when you wish, hence these are included in most of our online itineraries. However, if you want to reduce the cost of transport and splash out on a fabulous hotel along the way, opting for a couple of coach transfers on the longer rides is a great way to do this.
There are a number of excellent and iconic train rides throughout the country and we highly recommend including at least one or two in your holiday. The most popular one is of course the train ride to Machu Picchu but there are also a variety of routes that cut through the Andean highlights offering a beautiful and relaxing way to get to your next destination. We particularly love the one-day train between Cusco and Puno as well as the extremely luxurious overnight option run by the Belmond group.
You should expect to take at least two internal flights during your holiday in Peru. We recommend us booking these for you, should there be any problems or changes with flights on the day, but if you prefer to book them yourself it is not a problem. The planes are comfortable and generally flights will be no longer than 45 minutes – 1.5 hours but it is not unusual to make a stop en route where passengers will disembark and others board (you do not have to change planes if continuing to the final destination).
Taxis in large cities and small towns are widespread and cheap so the ideal way to get around in the evenings or during free time. The best way to book these would be at the hotel or restaurant, generally prices seem to be fair and you don’t have to barter but it is advisable to have an idea of what the price should be. Uber is a great way to get around in Lima which takes cost concerns out of the question. In smaller rural towns you will see small motorised rickshaws (which are called ‘moto taxis’) which are also very cheap and an original mode of transport!
