Elena Explores The Hidden Gem of: Saint Kitts and Nevis

By Elena Sandford-Hawken on 16th August, 2024

My love for St Kitts and Nevis comes from it being off the tourist track, with an old-world West Indies charm.

The unique appeal lies in the experiences: so let me show you a few of my favorite photos and memories….

I love Hiking and was surprised and delighted when I learnt that there were some fabulous options!

Saint Kitts wouldn’t be top of mind for a hiking holiday, but hiking Mount Liamuiga is incredibly rewarding as you stare down inside it. Valley of The Giants is a more relaxed alternative.

Once you’ve conquered that, Nevis Peak is more like an abseil and is one of the most challenging climbs I have ever done. On clear days, there are remarkable views from the top of both mountains, including the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, making these challenges more than worth it.

Luckily, I had stunning beaches to relax in between!

It’s a beautiful place to explore, both above and below the water.

It’s perfect for snorkeling, kayaking, diving, jet skiing, fishing, and so much more.

One of my favorite memories is sailing along the coastline, passing volcanic rock formations and crystal-clear waters, and stopping to snorkel. As I soaked up the sun and the serene surroundings, I noticed how kind the boat crew was, helping families with their children so the parents could relax.

The entire experience was peaceful and rejuvenating, a representation of the islands which is the perfect balance between adventure and tranquility.

Exploring Saint Kitts can be done partly on a Sugar Train…

Some other highlights are Brimstone Hill, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the best-preserved fortifications in the Americas, dating back to 1690. The views from the top are incredible, with nearby islands like St. Eustatius, Saba, and even St. Barths visible. Stunning scenery made this visit truly memorable.

The Old Road Rum Company, the oldest surviving rum distillery in the Caribbean, dating back to 1681 offers rum-tasting and is next door to Romney Manor, home to Caribelle Batik. The beautiful house and gardens, along with the fascinating batik process, showcased impressive artistry and craftsmanship—a perfect end to a day rich in history and culture.

Nevis is the perfect quaint little place to chill, with only 11,00 inhabitants…

Simply relax or enjoy activities such as  deep sea fishing, golf, exploring  nature trails – horse riding at sunset being a personal favourite.

A lasting memory is of the afternoon after hiking Nevis peak it felt like such an achievement starring back at it whilst relaxing on the beautiful beach……

Saint Kitts and Nevis both have stunning hotels on the beach and in the mountains…
