Avoiding hotspot regret in Egypt & Japan

By Alba Garcia on 12th December, 2025

Egypt – without the hotspot regret

The last time I visited Cairo, I was eager to go inside the Great Pyramid. It meant an early start, but our guide promised it would be worth it—and just 15 minutes would make all the difference. As soon as the Giza Plateau opened, we headed straight inside.

Inside the narrow, dark tunnels, it was just my colleague Lynn, a few other visitors, and me. I even paid a little extra to the guardian of the Great Chamber to enjoy some quiet, peaceful moments alone in that extraordinary space. By the time we exited, the crowds were arriving, and I was so glad we’d timed it perfectly. No hotspot regret for me – it was worth sacrificing a lie in to experience the quiet in this incredible peace.

With Fleewinter, you can be sure you’ll visit these amazing places at the right time—avoiding the crowds and making the most of every moment.

The picture was taken by my colleague Lynn that morning as we were rushing to the Great Pyramid.

We had to stop for a moment to capture it, we couldn’t believe there was no one around at what felt like the most perfect photo spot in all of Giza!

Our Best of Egypt Luxury Itinerary is the perfect blend of relaxation and cultural excursions – will you take a wander inside the Great Pyramid?

Japan without FOMO

Kyoto is undoubtedly fascinating and a must-visit, but these days it can be very crowded.

In my first visit to Japan, I wanted to truly experience the feeling of a historic city—walking narrow alleyways, visiting tea houses, and perhaps even spotting a geisha—without the crowds and tourist cameras spoiling the magic.

We love exploring and sharing our secrets with our clients, and for a truly authentic experience, all you need is to visit a nearby, lesser-known but incredibly charming city.

There, beyond the geisha district, I had the chance to visit a samurai home, enjoy matcha, and share a lovely moment with a local couple who insisted on inviting me for a cup. While we chatted, the older woman I was speaking with told me she had dedicated her life to the prestigious art of kimono dressing, and shared some interesting stories.

It was a beautiful, intimate glimpse into old Japan, and the calm, unhurried moment made the chance for this unforgettable experience to happen. I didn’t ask the couple for a photo, but this picture was taken just after they left, carrying the cup of matcha they had so kindly shared with me.

My 17-day Classic Tour: Best of Japan takes in these, and more, spots where you’ll discover the real Japan, far away from the crowds and top-ten-must-do-chasers.

I know it sounds counter-intuitive... but leave your morning alarm on while on holiday, and take advantage of the quieter times to visit hotspots. They're worth the wake-up call, I promise.
