Exploring Bhutan

Flights to Bhutan

Flights to Bhutan are limited as only two airlines fly into the country. Druk Air flies into Paro from Bangkok, Kathmandu, Singapore, five airports in India including New Delhi, and Dubai. Bhutan Airlines flies between Paro and Bangkok, New Delhi, Kolkata, and Kathmandu.

As not all flights depart daily and weather conditions in Bhutan can cause flight delays, we recommend allowing at least 24 hours in your connecting city to ensure that you make all connections. When you book with us, we will handle the flights into and out of Bhutan as part of your holiday. We can assist with flights to your gateway city at an extra cost so you may prefer to book those directly. We’re happy to advise as best we can and suggest having a look at our pages on flights to India and Thailand. For those wishing to visit Nepal, flights from the UK to Kathmandu are available with multiple airlines and one stop along the way including Cathay Pacific, Thai Airways, Qatar, Air India, Emirates, Singapore, Turkish, and Malaysia Airlines.

If you’ll be trekking in Bhutan, we recommend spending time in Nepal first to begin adjusting to the altitude. Whatever your plans within Bhutan, we think it’s a great idea to combine your Bhutan holiday with another destination in Asia such as Nepal, Thailand, India, or Singapore.

As of late October 2024, there are daily flights to/from Kathmandu, Bangkok, and New Delhi. Flights operate twice per week to/from Singapore, Dubai, and Kolkata.

Paro
Home to the country's only international airport and the well-known cliffside Paro Taktsang or Tiger's Nest monastery, your holiday will almost certainly start and end here.
Thimphu
This capital city is the largest in the nation and although it's becoming more modern, it maintains its historic character and charm. Home to many museums and other sights that provide insight into Bhutanese culture, Thimphu is worth at least two nights on your holiday.
Punakha
Generally considered the most beautiful fortress in a country full of stunning buildings, Punakha Dzong alone makes it worth visiting this small city in a subtropical valley. The drive over mountain passes is memorable and on a clear day, the views are spectacular.
Gangtey
If you're hoping to see black-necked cranes, the Gangtey region will be on your itinerary. Late October is typically the best month to see these rare birds coming through although you may see them all the way into February.
Bumthang
Many call this the cultural heart of the country, and if time allows for a visit to Bumthang, you'll be well rewarded. Bring good walking shoes as some of the best sights are seen on foot.
