Grand Bahama is the fourth largest Bahamian island, and features miles upon miles of powder-white sands, verdant nature preserves and sapphire-blue seas. As the northernmost island, it’s easy to hop a plane, board a cruise or even take a ferry from Florida to Freeport — affectionately called the Second City of The Bahamas — and find yourself relaxing on a quiet beach in no time.

Grand Bahama is commonly divided into three main sections:

East End: Sparsely developed, the eastern side of the island is dotted with many quaint settlements, secluded beaches, and ecological wonders ideal for nature enthusiasts. Settlements include High Rock, McLeans Town, Sweeting’s Cay and Deep Water Cay.

Freeport/Lucaya: A massive pine barren just over 60 years ago, the city of Freeport is now the commercial, industrial and touristic center of activity on Grand Bahama Island. Port Lucaya Marketplace is the main shopping and entertainment plaza where you’ll find dozens of specialty boutiques, restaurants, waterfront bars, live entertainment and much more. Visitors can choose from a wide variety of eco-adventures, like kayaking through the mangroves, jeep safaris, ATV off-roading, motorized bikes, diving tours and dolphin interactions.

West End: The capital of Grand Bahama, West End dates back to the prosperous days of bootlegging but nowadays resembles a quiet fishing village with quaint bars, restaurants, and churches. Many fishing legends, fishing tours and ecology tours launch from the marinas in western Grand Bahama.

Beaches: Grand Bahama Island’s sprawling reef-protected shoreline and cays are filled with 43 named, picturesque beaches. Here are a few options for your clients to explore.

  • Paradise Cove for snorkeling, kayaking and paddle boarding right off the beach
  • Lucaya Beach for waterskiing and parasailing
  • Smith’s Point and Williams Town for conch shacks, beach bars & entertainment
  • Taino Beach for beach swings, zip-lining and water trampolines
  • Fortune Beach for beachfront dining

The most spectacular beach on the island by far is Gold Rock Beach, part of the protected Lucayan National Park. At low tide, this beach unveils its signature rippled sand playground, which the locals call their official “welcome mat.”
