The communal spaces inside the house comprise of intimate sitting areas hosting cosy sofas and antique lattice chairs, ideal for curling up in at the end of the day with a good book or a gin and tonic. The property is absolutely ideal for couples. It is relaxed yet sophisticated, romantic and private.
Guests can dine in style in the dining room or on the less formal veranda overlooking the garden and Kandyan countryside. There is a set daily menu - limited to a starter, choice of two main courses - perhaps tamarind prawns or Thai green curry - and a dessert such as sticky lime pie. Any lack of choice is made up for in the quality and freshness of the ingredients and special meals can of course be made on request.
The drinks menu is one of the most impressive to be found in Sri Lanka, with a list of cocktails to die for and tasty enough to rival those found in London's West End. Even the welcome drink of fresh passion fruit was superb.
The hotel is within easy reach of Kandy without being right in the city's heart, so you can visit classic sights such as the Temple of the Tooth and the Botanical Gardens with ease, but also consider some of the less visited beauty spots in the area like the Victoria Reservoir. The Victoria Golf course is about 30mins away.
If you are lucky enough to be travelling in August you will catch the largest Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka the Perehera when pilgrims flock to the ancient capital to watch the procession of decorated elephants, temple dancers, fireworks and the tooth relic.
Only children over the age of 12 are welcome unless the hotel is booked exclusively.
There is no air-conditioning at the hotel, but this is really not necessary due to altitude.
