Perched on a cliff facing the Atlantic Ocean, the dramatic views from Estalagem Ponta do Sol hotel will leave you breathless. The hotel is a result of the renovation of an old “quinta”, and the goal was simple: to integrate the original buildings in a distinct, contemporary style. The architecture enhances the beauty of an already beautiful place and the atmosphere is simple and relaxed, yet sophisticated.

Located in the south-west of Madeira, in the village of Ponta do Sol, it is known for being the warmest point on the island and gets more sun than any other area. Hence the name “point of the sun”. The village is more than 500 years old (do see the 15th-century interiors of the local church, Nossa Senhora da Luz) and thrived on the banana and sugar cane industry. Now its charming seafront promenade is an attraction in itself. It is a 30-minute drive to Funchal and 40 minutes to the airport.

The 54 rooms are simple but pleasing. Interior designer Carvalho Araújo, white-washed the inn inside and out and added minimalist furnishings in light wood, floors of slate and black-and-white photographs on the walls, allowing your eye to be dominated by the magnificent coastal views. Cubes, angles and boxes are linked by bridges creating a stark, design-driven exterior but the interiors are flooded with light from its clifftop position. Split between garden and sea view, all have balconies or terraces and come with slate floors and floor-to-ceiling glass windows to let in the panoramic views.

The view in the dining room over the bay and Atlantic beyond, makes this restaurant a ‘not to be missed’ experience. The food mixes regional and international dishes – expect local hams and the catch of the day, accompanied by their popular beet and lime risotto. Breakfast is both à la carte and buffet with a good range of choice from local pastries to fruits of the island.

The stunning infinity pool and hot tub with panoramic views are the favourite facilities of the guests but there are many more available. A game of tennis can be enjoyed on the court, located a 2-minute walk from the Estalagem Da Ponta Do Sol. Guests can also relax the spa & wellness centre where a sauna and massage therapies are provided plus an indoor pool, gym and yoga and Qi Gong classes are available.

Hotel da Vila
A few minutes walk away is Hotel da Vila. a 15 room boutique hotel that is run by Estalagem Ponta de Sol. Located right on the water in the centre of the village, it’s terrace is the perfect place to have a pre-dinner drink and watch the sunset. The hotel also has a bar and restaurant and guests can use all the facilities of both hotels.

If you're looking for something more adventurous Ponta do Sol is a great starting point for;

Diving.
Madeira has a warm climate that allows year-round diving in one of the deepest sea coasts of Europe, with a varied underwater life. Diving in Madeira is certainly a plus, with or without experience. There is a diving school just in front of the hotel.

Canyoning.
Madeira is one of the best places in Europe for this activity, an exhilarating sport that takes place in a mountainous watercourse, where one has to swim, jump and do rappels in small waterfalls to overcome the obstacles of nature.

Trecking & Walking Paths.
Madeira “levadas” walks are famous worldwide, walking through these open irrigation channels, that started being built in the fifteenth century, is the healthiest way to enjoy some fantastic views of mountain scenery through the Laurisilva forest, which is indigenous to the island.

Whale watching and surfing are also popular activities.
