This 18th Century historic riad set in the ancient Mouassine district of the Medina has been sympathetically restored preserving most of the original layout and structure. The main courtyard is dominated by the 7 metre plunge pool which is essential on hot Moroccan days where you can enjoy a mint-tea or cold drink. There is a large dining area and salon (sitting room) off the patio. On the first floor there is a second salon with a 250 year old original hand painted red cedar ceiling where it is cool to relax. Yet, despite the central location it is a very quiet area in the summer and where an olive wood fire is lit in the winter months. On the roof is a substantial terrace with several quiet corners to relax or to take breakfast. There is a large comfortable tent where you can relax all day or romantically dine on a warm evening. On the sun terrace you can sunbathe on loungers or relax on sofas in the shade of a smaller tent overlooking the Medina and the High Atlas mountains, one of the best views of any riad and a delight to see the illuminated Koutobia Mosque in the evenings.

El Zohar has two excellent chefs with a typically Moroccan menu prepared with ingredients freshly purchased to the guests order every morning. On request, by discussion with the manager, many other beautiful dishes can be prepared using seasonal ingredients from the daily markets. You can choose to dine by candle light on the roof terrace, in the terrace tent, on the patio or in the dining room. Cookery lessons are also available starting with a trip to buy spices and visit the markets.

The location is right in the very centre of the Medina so all the main attractions are only a few minutes walk away, a perfect base for getting to know Marrakech. Jemna El Fna Square is five minutes walk and the centre of the Souk is just two minutes walk from the front door. Despite the central location it is a very quiet area and once back in the riad peace reigns. Guests are supplied with maps and copious advice & information to enhance their visit to Marrakech.

Tea & coffee are complimentary all day and the price of the rooms includes all payable taxes. WiFi is free and available throughout the riad.

The bedrooms, which are arranged around the central courtyard, are all furbished to the same high standard and all are ensuite featuring traditional Tadelakt polished plaster. The bathroom all have hairdryer, dressing gowns, shampoo, body wash, hand wash, cotton pads and cotton buds.... designed to save luggage weight for the guests. The bedrooms all have aircon, which cools in summer and reverses to heat in winter.

Note - no children under 8 yrs unless the whole riad is hired by a family or group

'Riad el Zohar – Alan and his staff were so welcoming and the guidance he gave us on finding our way around and seeing the best of the city was invaluable and confidence inspiring. Dinner for 2 on the roof terrace as the sun was going down (in November!!) giving way to the sky at night enjoying a superb tagine was an experience we’ll never forget. Loved the souks and the good humoured characters we bartered with for our lovely leather slippers and other bits and pieces. The Secret Garden is gorgeous and well worth a visit' Gill S. 'Riad El Zohar - beautiful riad in a perfect location with fabulous hosts!' Joanna T. April 2014

'Traditional Riad tucked inside the Medina, very close to the souks - beautiful courtyard and plunge pool, roof terrace with good views, all furnished in traditional Moroccan style. Very friendly staff and good food. Great place to come back to after exploring the medina - always made very welcome, with complimentary mint tea and a fire in the evenings if it was cool - perfect!' Chris and Ruth M. March 2014

'A wonderful Riad. Allan was the perfect host, welcoming, helpful and full of interesting knowledge and facts. The room was comfortable and perfect really, and the Riad itself beautiful and quiet - especially considering its vicinity to the central square and souks. We really enjoyed our brief stay here. The highlight for us was the roof terrace and eating breakfast with the view of the atlas mountains, just beautiful. The meals were also delicious.' Claire E, November 2013

'Riad El Zohar, where we've stayed before, is just so lovely - an oasis in Marrakesh' AnneMarie R. May 2013

'El Zohar in Marrakech was outstanding, and all the rest were very good.' Alan M. March 2013

'Riad El Zohar was wonderful, a real oasis of calm with the plunge pool, plants & the roof terrace. The staff were all lovely - very helpful & friendly. The food was excellent - breakfasts & we booked an evening meal on the first night. The rooms were excellent with lovely thick white towers, plenty of hot water, dressing gowns & lovely shower gel & water for teeth cleaning etc. Also some excellent ideas of places to eat.' Patricia E April 2011

"The Riad was perfect and the staff couldn't do enough to make us feel comfortable and welcome - it was a very peaceful, exotic and romantic haven in the midst of the old Medina. We can't wait to return and would definitely choose Riad el Zohar as the location was amazing and it seemed a very "happy house". The dinner on our first night was wonderful in front of a roaring log fire, with an anniversary cake served as a surprise after the meal. Naima and Eradi were just charming, cheerful and always went the extra mile to help us." Roy and Jackie M. January 2009
