Icelandic Winter Hiking Holiday

Icelandic Winter Hiking Holiday

Your Itinerary

Day 1 - Head to The Mystical West Coast of Iceland

Welcome to the Land of Ice and Fire! Don’t waste any time hanging around. Your driver will transfer you straight to the Snaefellsness Peninsula (National Park) on Iceland’s West Coast so you can spend the evening relaxing before your hike the next day. Spend 2 nights at Hotel Budir.

Day 2 - Hiking Snaefellsness Glacier & Coastal Area

This morning you can either hike the beautiful coastal area or up Snaefellsjokull glacier and the volcano beneath. Snæfellsjökull is renowned for being the starting point of Jules Verne’s  “A Journey to the Center of the Earth”. The hike to the summit is not an arduous ones but can be slightly more challenging with varying winter weather conditions and shorter daylight hours hence the alternative option of the beautiful coastal path which takes in traditional, fishing villages, black sand beaches, a seal colony, basalt cliffs, lava fields and Iceland’s most famous mountain, Kirkjufell with its plethora of waterfalls (which looks absolutely incredible when bathed in the bright array of the Aurora Borealis).

Day 3 - Scenic Drive, Borgarnes & Reykjavik

This morning, you will journey down to Reykjavik, stopping off at the beautiful town of Borganes, one of the first places Norwegian Vikings settled when they arrived in Iceland. You will drive through a striking fjord and past scenic mountains.

Once in Reykjavik you can either explore its charming streets, the marina, see the sights and mingle with ‘Reykjavikians’ in the trendy cafes, bakeries, bars and restaurants or perhaps go for a a ‘foodie tour’.

Day 4 - Snowshoeing in The Blue Mountains

This morning you will embark upon a snowshoeing adventure in the Blue Mountains just south of Reykjavik (no previous snowshoeing experience required) and make your way across an ancient crater taking in the beautiful vistas.

Later continue along the south coast, stopping to take in the absolutely stunning Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls before checking into Skalakot Country Hotel to relax and unwind where you will be perfectly placed if the Northern Lights make an appearance.

Day 5 - Hike the Sólheimajokull Outlet Glacier

Your guides will take you east to the Soheimajokull Outlet Glacier and after a brief crampon and axe demonstration you will hike along the glacier. Solheimajokull is a beautiful and easily accessible outlet glacier. It is known as the Glacier of Fire and Ice due to all the ash, from previous eruptions, mixed in with the ice. The active volcano Katla lies beneath the glacier.

Choose to either relax after your hike or go for an afternoon hike around the Vik area or perhaps a horse ride from your hotel, where they breed the Icelandic horse.

Day 6 - The Blue Lagoon & Fly Home

You will be taken to the Blue Lagoon this morning where you can soak any tired muscles in the milky healing waters of the Blue Lagoon. You could opt for a massage or just set and have a drink in the bar whilst you bathe.

You will be transferred to the airport (nearby) to fly home!
