Exploring Guatemala

When to go

When is the best time to travel to Guatemala?

The land of eternal Spring, the climate in Guatemala is pleasant all-year-round. The dry season runs from November to to April, with most rain falling between June and September. However, the rain usually comes in short heavy bursts in the afternoon. The highlands offer a refreshing evening chill all year round. Whereas Tikal in the lowlands can be humid with eerie showers and mist.

The best time to visit Guatemala is at Easter to witness the impressive sawdust carpets and mournful processions throughout Antigua.  It is recommended to book accommodation well in advance. Hotel rates do increase during this time as the city fills with national and international tourists.

Another popular time to visit Guatemala is for All Saints’ Day on 2 November. It can be seen as elaborate as Mexico’s ‘Day of the Dead’, as Guatemalans take to their families graves to drink and dance in honor of their deceased loved ones. The main highlight of this celebration takes place at the kite festival in Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez. Bamboo structures lift intricately patterned patches of woven cloth – held together by rope from the maguey and yucca flower glue – high into the sky.
