Planning Your Journey to South America’s Most Diverse Destination

You’ve made the brilliant decision to visit Ecuador and the legendary Galapagos Islands—congratulations! Now comes the practical bit: getting there.

As an international traveller, you’re looking at a long-haul journey to reach this extraordinary corner of South America, but don’t worry. We can help and guide you through all your options for a smooth, stress-free journey from your doorstep to the wonders of Ecuador.

International Flights: UK to Ecuador

The Route Options

From the UK, you’ll be flying to one of Ecuador’s two international airports:

  • Quito (Mariscal Sucre International Airport, UIO) – Ecuador’s capital city, sitting at 2,850 metres in the Andean highlands
  • Guayaquil (José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport, GYE) – Ecuador’s largest city and main port on the Pacific coast

There are currently no direct flights from the UK to Ecuador, so you’ll need to connect via a hub city in Europe or the Americas. Here are your primary options:

European Connections

KLM via Amsterdam

  • Depart from: London Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh, or other UK airports
  • Connection: Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS)
  • Destination: Quito or Guayaquil
  • Flight time: Approximately 15-17 hours including transit
  • Frequency: Daily service
  • Pro tip: KLM offers excellent connections from multiple UK cities and reliable service with good onward timing to both Ecuadorian cities.

Iberia via Madrid

  • Depart from: London Heathrow or London Gatwick
  • Connection: Madrid Barajas (MAD)
  • Destination: Quito or Guayaquil
  • Flight time: Approximately 15-17 hours including transit
  • Frequency: Daily service
  • Pro tip: As a Spanish carrier, Iberia offers Spanish-speaking crew and a nice taste of Latin culture before you arrive.

Air France via Paris

  • Depart from: London Heathrow, Manchester, Edinburgh, or other UK airports
  • Connection: Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG)
  • Destination: Quito
  • Flight time: Approximately 16-18 hours including transit
  • Frequency: Several times weekly
  • Pro tip: Air France has competitive fares and partners with KLM to offer flexible routings and departures from several regional airports in UK.

American Connections

USA airlines can sometimes be price competitive, but we do not recommend flying via the US if travelling from Europe, as there is the extra implications of custom controls once you land, and before your connection to Ecuador.  LATAM, however, can be a good option if you are flying from London. It is the biggest South American carrier and can be price competitive, although overall travelling time can be longer.

LATAM via São Paulo

  • Depart from: London Heathrow
  • Connection: São Paulo Guarulhos (GRU)
  • Destination: Quito
  • Flight time: Approximately 19-21 hours including transit
  • Frequency: Several times weekly
  • Pro tip: This South American carrier offers good service and sometimes competitive fares, though the connection time can be longer.

Domestic Flights: Reaching the Galapagos Islands

Once you’ve arrived in mainland Ecuador, you’ll need another flight to reach the Galapagos Islands, which lie approximately 1,000 kilometres off Ecuador’s coast in the Pacific Ocean. At least a night in Quito or Guayaquil before and after might be necessary in order to connect with the onward flight to the islands.

The Galapagos Airports

The Galapagos archipelago has two airports:

  • Baltra Island (Seymour Airport, GPS) – the main entry point, serving Santa Cruz Island
  • San Cristobal Island (San Cristobal Airport, SCY) – serving the easternmost populated island

Three airlines currently operate flights to the Galapagos: LATAM Ecuador, Avianca Ecuador and Equair (newest carrier, began operations in 2021).

All Galapagos flights operate from either Quito or Guayaquil, with these typical patterns:

  • Quito to Galapagos: All flights stop in Guayaquil, making this essentially a two-leg journey
  • Guayaquil to Galapagos: Direct flights taking approximately 1 hour 45 minutes

The daily flight schedule generally follows this pattern:

  • Morning departures from Quito (07:00-09:00)
  • Brief stop in Guayaquil (30-45 minutes)
  • Arrival in Galapagos around midday
  • Return flights depart Galapagos in the early afternoon, arriving back on the mainland by evening

Important Considerations for Galapagos Flights

The earlier you enquire and book, the better: Unlike many domestic flight routes worldwide, Galapagos flights often sell out weeks or even months in advance, especially during peak seasons (June-September and December-January).

Enquire for your holiday to Ecuador & Galapagos well in advance. We will always include the return flights to the islands in our quotes and if you are going on a cruise, the domestic flights must be booked with the cruise operator.

Baggage restrictions are strict: Airlines enforce strict weight limitations for the Galapagos route. Typically, you’re allowed 20kg of checked luggage and one 8kg carry-on. Excess baggage fees are substantial, so pack carefully.

How We Can Help

Navigating the various flight options can be complex, but as Ecuador specialists, we offer:

  • Domestic flight booking service: We always include the domestic flights as part of your package as this give us control in case of schedule changes.
  • Flexibility with International flights: You may choose to purchase your own international flights in which case we will provide advice on the best routes.
