You’ve made the brilliant decision to visit Ecuador and the legendary Galapagos Islands—congratulations! Now comes the practical bit: getting there.
As an international traveller, you’re looking at a long-haul journey to reach this extraordinary corner of South America, but don’t worry. We can help and guide you through all your options for a smooth, stress-free journey from your doorstep to the wonders of Ecuador.
The Route Options
From the UK, you’ll be flying to one of Ecuador’s two international airports:
There are currently no direct flights from the UK to Ecuador, so you’ll need to connect via a hub city in Europe or the Americas. Here are your primary options:
European Connections
KLM via Amsterdam
Iberia via Madrid
Air France via Paris
American Connections
USA airlines can sometimes be price competitive, but we do not recommend flying via the US if travelling from Europe, as there is the extra implications of custom controls once you land, and before your connection to Ecuador. LATAM, however, can be a good option if you are flying from London. It is the biggest South American carrier and can be price competitive, although overall travelling time can be longer.
LATAM via São Paulo
Once you’ve arrived in mainland Ecuador, you’ll need another flight to reach the Galapagos Islands, which lie approximately 1,000 kilometres off Ecuador’s coast in the Pacific Ocean. At least a night in Quito or Guayaquil before and after might be necessary in order to connect with the onward flight to the islands.
The Galapagos archipelago has two airports:
Three airlines currently operate flights to the Galapagos: LATAM Ecuador, Avianca Ecuador and Equair (newest carrier, began operations in 2021).
All Galapagos flights operate from either Quito or Guayaquil, with these typical patterns:
The daily flight schedule generally follows this pattern:
The earlier you enquire and book, the better: Unlike many domestic flight routes worldwide, Galapagos flights often sell out weeks or even months in advance, especially during peak seasons (June-September and December-January).
Enquire for your holiday to Ecuador & Galapagos well in advance. We will always include the return flights to the islands in our quotes and if you are going on a cruise, the domestic flights must be booked with the cruise operator.
Baggage restrictions are strict: Airlines enforce strict weight limitations for the Galapagos route. Typically, you’re allowed 20kg of checked luggage and one 8kg carry-on. Excess baggage fees are substantial, so pack carefully.
Navigating the various flight options can be complex, but as Ecuador specialists, we offer:
