When to visit Cayman depends on how hot you like it. It’s always hot and the sun is quite strong so it feels much hotter than the temperature would have you believe. During “wet” season, rain showers are often brief although you may get more overcast days.
November through April is considered dry season so these are the busiest months with daytime temperatures averaging 25-27° C that feel more like 33-35° C. In May, temperatures begin to rise and by July and August, the average daily temperature goes up to 30° C and can feel like 39° C. With the summer heat comes the rain. Generally, rain showers are brief and intense then blow out to sea, leaving clear skies and bright sun. In September and October, rain can be heavier and skies more cloudy.
Crowds are at their heaviest during these months so booking ahead is critical. The sun is intense and with little rain to cool things down, those 27° days often feel more like 35° or hotter. January brings internationally renowned chefs and wine experts for the annual Cayman Cookout. Events include tastings, demonstrations, tours, and dinners. This event is quite popular so advance planning for those wishing to attend is a must.
For those who like the heat and don’t mind a burst of rain, this is a great time to visit the Cayman Islands as prices drop and the crowds thin. Hurricane season runs June through November but the islands have been spared in recent years as most storms have gone east of Cuba. The islands are well prepared to deal with tropical storms and good warning systems are in place.
The low season is also festival time. Many of the festivals are great fun to watch – our favourite is Pirates Week when two pirate ships sail in to port. Batabano Carnival occurs on all three of the islands with masquerade parades and parties at the tail end of April and first week of May. In early June, anglers flock to Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac for the annual Cayman Islands International Fishing Tournament. July brings the Million Dollar Run, a speedboat race held in Grand Cayman with races of watercraft from jet skis to high performance boats.
November sees Pirates Week Festival on Grand Cayman with concerts, fireworks, a cardboard boat race, and other events. A Literary Festival brings storytellers from around the Caribbean and family-friendly readings occur around Grand Cayman.
