Termez, a remote city in the south of Uzbekistan, is an ancient centre of Buddhism and a fascinating, little-visited destination – in fact during the Soviet era travel to this area was forbidden for foreigners. On this 2 day extension visit centuries old Buddhist monastery complexes, the collection of mausoleums known as the Sultan Saodat Ensemble, the Kokildor-Ota Khanaka, the Archaeology Museum and the unusual Jarkurgan Minaret. This area is near the Afghanistan border and there are some splendid views of this remote, isolated landscape.
Transfer to Tashkent airport for a flight to Termez. On arrival meet your local guide and drive to this ancient city. During the course of your sightseeing, you will visit Termez Fortress Kyrk-Kyz – a summer residence of the Samani rulers, Sultan Saodat Ensemble, Kokildor-Ota Khanaka, the Buddhist archaeological sites of Kara-Tepe, Fayaz-Tepe and the Mausoleum of Al-Hakim at-Termezi. Later drive north-east to see Kampyr-Tepe – a Greco-Bactrian Kingdom fortress
After breakfast in your hotel, enjoy a half day city tour visiting the Jarkurgan Minaret and enjoy views of Surkhan oasis and Friendship Bridge, which connects Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. Lunch will be at a local restaurant where you can try regional dishes. After lunch visit the Archaeology Museum and browse exhibits discovered in Termez and its surroundings. Have an early supper before transferring to the station where you will catch the overnight train, in a 2-berth cabin, to Tashkent.
Arrive in Tashkent train station from the overnight train from Termez.
