Overall, this exciting Summit to Sea itinerary combines Mountain trekking, Chimpanzee tracking, and a beach stay. You start with one night in Arusha, before your guided hike up Mount Meru starts. After that you start a 4 days trek with 3 nights at different mountain huts. Afterwards you are on your way to a well-deserved safari tour. During your safari you visit the Ngorongoro Crater, with a stop at the Mto Wa Mbu Village en route. Furthermore during this 3 elements tour, your driver takes you to Ndutu for your next safari stop. Above all, Ndutu area is witness of the Great Migration from December to March in the Serengeti Side.

 

Chimpanzees

After that, leave Ndutu and a charter flight and boat transfer takes you to Mahale National Park. Especially to enjoy the primary activity in the park, chimpanzee tracking! For this reason, a guided chimpanzee tracking tour is included in the itinerary. Undoubtedly an unforgettable experience!

 

Beach Time

After all that chimpanzee tracking, your next charter flight takes you back to Arusha. However, you need one overnight at Arusha to connect with your flight to Zanzibar the next morning. Hence, the next morning you fly to Zanzibar. As soon as you arrive, you start with a stay in Stone Town for 2 nights. Both a guided Stone Town and Spice Tour is arranged here, before its time to relax your last 3 nights at the beach.

 

Your Itinerary

Day 1 - Welcome to Tanzania

Today has no planned activities and is only an arrival day for you to reach your base lodge. A private airport transfer is included from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Arusha. Your pre-climb briefing will be with your mountain guide.

The rest of the day (depending on the arrival time) you are free to prepare for your Mount Meru climb.

1 night at Katambuga House

Day 2 - Mount Meru

You will be transferred by road from Arusha to Momella gate inside of Arusha National Park. After registration  you trek today through the grassland and into the rain forest with your guide and armed ranger (shared by all groups for everyone’s safety whilst you hike near wildlife). You may encounter some wild animals such as buffalo, giraffes, zebras or antelopes and plenty of bird and plant species on your way to Miriakamba hut.

Day 3 - More climbing

Today’s hike is steep and leaves the rain forest behind you and takes you into the heather & moorland zone. Ascending through the changed landscape along the edges of the saddle between the Meru peaks, as you start to get views of the Crater and Ash Tray.

After arriving at the Saddle Huts you can hike further to the peak of ‘Little Meru’ for additional acclimatization before your summit attempt.

Day 4 - The Summit

In the early morning (around 00:00am) you begin your final ascent to the summit of Meru through the alpine zone. The trek is a steep hike over loose volcanic scree taking you to Rhino Point (3800m or 12470ft) then to Cobra point (4350m or 14270ft) before reaching the ridge of ash and rock till the Socialist Peak (4566m or 14980ft) which is Tanzania’s second highest and Africa’s 4th highest mountain top where you may enjoy sunrise before descending back through the trail all the way down to the rain forest zone.

Day 5 - What comes up, must go down

Your final day on Meru is a quick descent through the same rain forest as on the first day until Momella gate where our vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Arusha town.

1 night at Katambuga House

Day 6 - Safari Time

The coming 4 days you will have your own private driver and vehicle to take you around. After an early breakfast the road takes you to the Ngorongoro Crater. Along the way you will visit the Mto Wa Mbu village and enjoy a village walking tour. The tour includes lunch at a locals place. It is a great way to learn more about the locals and culture. In the afternoon you continue to Karatu.

1 night at Ngorongoro Farm House

Day 7-8 - The Serengeti

Today the road takes you along the Ngorongoro Crater with a game drive and a picnic lunch at the crater floor. After lunch you continue to the southwestern part of the Serengeti. Here you can enjoy game drives in the Serengeti and depending on the season, you can be lucky and witness the big migration.

2 nights at Ndutu Safari Lodge

9-11 - Chimpanzees

An early charter flight will take you from Ndutu airstrip to Mahale. Upon arrival at Mahale airstrip, a boat transfer will take you to your next stay. The next few days you will have lots of fun, going on game activities and tracking the Chimpanzees. Surely a once in a life-time activity.

3 nights at Mbali Mbali Mahale

Day 12 - Back to Arusha

After breakfast a boat transfer takes you back to Mahale airstrip for your flight back to Arusha. Upon arrival at Arusha, you will have a transfer to Katambuga house. A one night stay is necessary to connect with your flight to Zanzibar the next morning.

1 night at Katambuga House

Day 13-14 - Stone Town

After breakfast a transfer will take you to Arusha airport for your flight to Zanzibar. Upon arrival a road transfer takes you to your first accommodation. The afternoon is free to explore.

The next day you will have a guided full-day Stone Town & Spice tour.

2 nights at Emerson Spice

Day 15-17 - The Sea

This morning a transfer takes you to Mbweni for your boat transfer to Chumbe Island. The coming days you have time to relax, enjoy the sun, beach and sea. Go for a beach walk or go snorkelling and discover what lives underneath the surface of the blue waters.

3 nights at Pongwe Beach Lodge

Day 18 - Time to say goodbye!

Depending on the departure time, you can use the facilities until your tranfer takes you to Zanzibar airport to connect with your flight back home.
