Surely you’ve heard about Jakes Hotel in Treasure Beach. Yes, that funky but fabulous hotel that everyone raves about in tweets, blogs, and reviews.

It’s the original one-of-a-kind, hand-built, locally-crafted hotel in Treasure Beach. And it kicked off the craze for bohemian-Caribbean cool on Jamaica’s South Coast.

efore hip design-driven boutique hotels became a thing, there was Jakes. The hotel began its life as a restaurant, with Sally Henzell as proprietor-in-chief. A great success, tipsy guests begged Sally to build a place where they could spend the night. So she built one, and then another, and then another of her striking structures in a style that can best be described as Jimi Hendrix meets Antoni Gaudi on the beach in Jamaica.

These buildings—in bursts of blue, pink and acid yellow—dot the laidback beaches and sparsely populated coast of Treasure Beach. You’ll find most of these buildings at Jakes where, together, they house our colorful community of rooms. Some have ocean views, some have garden views; some have interior seating and dining areas; many have outdoor showers. Each has its own outdoor space and private entrance. No two rooms are exactly alike, yet all have oodles of character and charm.
