Stylish, luxurious and full of character. This exquisitely renovated 16th century Palace is a beautiful place to stay and discover charming Ljubljana.
The former aristocratic residence is now a luxurious boutique hotel situated in a tranquil spot in the heart of the city. A member of the Historic Hotels of Europe, the palace was converted into a luxury hotel in 2011, but its history goes beyond that (the foundations contain traces of the old Roman city walls).
The reception area has stone floors and rich Persian and Turkish rugs. The antique-filled corridors have vaulted ceilings and exposed stonework, flooded with natural light from two cobblestone courtyards.
Walls are hung with large, modern artworks, while the furniture is an eclectic mix of Biedermeier, bespoke and Baroque. A broad stone staircase leads up to the rooms, with corridors overlooking the courtyard.
There are 19 large, spacious rooms (most of them suites) that are tastefully decorated in keeping with the building’s character. Parquet flooring, high ceilings, white walls and chandeliers are complemented by original Biedermeier furniture, and elegant white furniture made for the hotel by Slovenian designers. The ceilings have exposed areas of original fresco paintings. Marble bathrooms come with combination bathtub-showers. Some rooms have a small terrace.
The old town-centre location puts it just a two-minute walk from Kongresni trg (Congress Square) and even less to the waterside promenades of the River Ljubljanica.
The old town is a wonderful place, with elegant Secessionist architecture offset by vibrant cafés spilling out onto cobbled streets, and a medieval castle perched on the hill above. The hotel stands next to Ljubljana University’s Academy of Music, and the soft sounds of pianos, violins, cellos and other instruments often drift across its ivy-clad courtyard.
