Located along the Kinabatangan River, this lodge provides simple accommodation and offers the best chance in the area to see fireflies.
Rooms are constructed from dark belian wood and cooled by ceiling fans. Outdoor seating areas, some with hammocks, grace all rooms. Air conditioning has been installed in a very limited number of guestrooms. A boardwalk into the jungle can be walked at any time and there are three towers for bird watching. Monkeys including macaques and langurs are routinely seen from the trails and from time to time, orangutans can be spotted. Weather permitting, a buffet breakfast is served inside the jungle after the morning river cruise. Macaques and bearded pigs are routine visitors during the meal. Lunch and dinner are served buffet-style by the river. Loungers and swings sit along the river providing a comfortable spot to relax and feel the breeze.
A stay at Abai includes a late afternoon river cruise that ends after sunset so you can see the fireflies lighting up in their chosen trees. A guided night walk is also available with a chance to see unique insects and, if you’re lucky, birds and other wildlife. Guests can choose to plant a tree and have lunch prepared by the local villagers with proceeds going directly to the village. While we do recommend spending more than one night along the Kinabatangan River, Abai Jungle Lodge is our suggestion for those who want to pack as much into a one-night stay as time allows.
