Flying from Johannesburg to Pemba, Mozambique, where you will be met by friendly faces and taken by car to meet your African Dhow which will transport you on crystal clear waters to Mogundula Island where you will be spending the next 2 nights. Known by the locals as the ‘island with the sacred lake’, this sanctuary offers amazing birdlife, excellent swimming off the sandbanks and some of the best snorkelling. The perfect ingredients to submerge yourself into the island safari ‘mode’! Spend the day sailing on a dhow to deserted islands and the evenings camping under shady trees with the sound of the ocean to lull you to sleep…
Today the adventure continues as you set sail into the azure of the Quirimbas Archipelago with pristine corals below to explore under snorkel. Explore the Ulumbwe river mouth where fascinating rural fishing villages dot the shoreline. The day is a leisurely pace and you can enjoy some kayaking and swimming along the way… Tonight you will be camping in the open Mozambique bush just south of the river mouth.
Take an early morning sail up the Ulumbwe estuary with its teaming birdlife and thriving mangroves to explore this untouched area. You then take to the turquoise clear waters and untamed ocean scenery to explore the southern tip of Matemo island. Kayak along the way, or take a dip to freshen up along the way, or just soak up the sunshine… In the afternoon explore a fishing village, learning the secrets from some of the islands best fisherman on the island. In the late afternoon you return to the camp at Ulumbwa – sun kissed and relaxed after a fun day of island hopping adventure!
The next 3 nights are spent on Ibo Island Lodge which offers amazing views over the waterfront along with elegant rooms. The emphasis is on complete relaxation and to use this as a base to explore this historical island. Seeped in history and mystery you can visit the 200 year old ghost town or explore mysterious forts and ancient trade buildings… and if that sounds like too much history then there is always the beach with some kayaking or just lazing away listening to the heartbeat of the ocean….
Take a last splash in the ocean or stroll along the beach along with some scrumptious breakfast before starting the journey home. Your transfer across to Pemba is in a light aircraft, flying over the islands and turquoise waters back to the mainland and Pemba to meet your flight back to Johannesburg. Sun-kissed and relaxed after your week of fun in the sun!
