Set in a private estate in the heart of Agafay desert, Camel Camp mixes its design inspiration from traditional caidal tents with modern facilities. It is run by one of Morocco's most passionate explorers and this gives it an authenticity.

Many people visit the Agafay desert as a more accessible version of the Sahara but to do this is missing the point. It is a beautiful, spiritual landscape in its own right and whilst technically a desert offers a totally different experience to the dunes of the Sahara. There is no sand but that means the wind and water-sculptured terrain has sharper relief and the colours of the low sun capture it in an even more dramatic way.

How you plan your trip to the Agafay is as important as where you stay. Many people choose to arrive mid-morning and then whilst you can go right into the camp by vehicle, we can arrange for camels to meet you on the road and the last part of the journey is done on hoof, arriving the traditional way to a shimmering plateau of pristine tents.

Have lunch enjoying the view (probably in the dining tent to avoid the glare of the sun) and then in the afternoon plan another activity (again must be pre-arranged). There are fossil-fuel powered quad bikes and buggies but our favourite option is cut out the noise, smell and fumes and go on an electric mountain bike tour to enjoy the desert in silence (or even just a guided walk)

After the busy day, retire to your luxury tent and clean up (all the tents have ensuite shower rooms). Then in the evening it is time to gather around the fire watch the sun set and allow your hosts to serve you traditional food (with very non-traditional beer and wine). Because of the nature of the camp you may be on your own or sharing the site with other travellers and families - the atmosphere will define itself, although for those who want the maximum exclusivity we can arrange a completely private camp in a separate location.

The next morning you can plan an early start to watch the sunrise or just have a leisurely breakfast before heading off. For the return journey this can be looped around the Kik Plateaus and into the High Altas for a completely different insight into Moroccan life.

The details

The tents are a mixture of the traditional caidal style and Safari tents but all are double-lined and have super-king sized beds (or full-sized twins) and some tents can take an extra adult or 2 extra child beds (it is also possible to have connecting tents). The all have 12 volt electric lighting and hot and cold running water in the basin and shower and chemical toilet. The decoration combines colonial campaign furniture with a mix of traditional Moroccan decor.

It is around an hour's drive from Marrakech. and one night is usually enough. For those on tight schedules we can also arrange a lunch plus activities so you get the experience without having to stay a night

Because of the range of temperatures that can be experienced, it is recommended to bring clothing to suit both warm and cooler weather, depending on the season. Also using sunscreen protection is essential in the desert. Rain is very rare - if just a shower it is not a problem, but if significant rain is forecast we will re-schedule the trip as there is no point if it is pouring - if re-scheduling is not possible a full refund we will be given.
