Areas of the Garden Route

Having travelled the Garden Route, we have chosen to focus on three main areas, which we believe offer the best range and choices of property, location and things to do.

We however do have access to properties in most locations and so please do let us know if you are looking for a specific area not shown here

Hermanus

Hermanus gets it name from Hermanus Pieters who founded the resort in the early 19 th century and has been a popular summer resort since the 1900's. There are some lovely beaches around Hermanus (Grotto Beach being a favourite) but it is most famous for its whales. The whale watching season is from April to October but they are often seen outside these times too.

Hermanus is the only town in the world with an official 'whale crier' and you'll see him wondering the streets with his horn and sandwich board. There are good viewing points from the cliffs and the Old Harbour and this is now the hub of the tourist town with shops, a lively craft market, cafes and restaurants.

Surrounding Hermanus is stunning scenery and you can hike through the mountain and costal fynbros of the Fernkloof Nature Reserve. There are also some lovely coastal cliff top walks.

You are also well placed for day trips to other local towns and villages and only a couple of hours from Cape Town, and even less to the airport.

We have many different types of properties in Hermanus, from the family friendly Grotto Beach Hut to the stylish Solar Beach House and, for families and groups travelling together, a 10 bedroom villa known as Maanskynhuis.

Knysna

Knysna nestles on the banks of a beautiful lagoon in the heart of the 'Garden Route'. Two large sandstone cliffs, the famous "Heads" of Knysna, shield its narrow access to the sea.

Driving from Cape Town you pick up the N2 which takes you along the Garden Route and approximately 5 hours drive later (300 miles) you arrive in peaceful Knysna. From Port Elizabeth it's approximately a 160 mile journey.

The lagoon is perfect for water sports, boat trips, fishing and diving. It is also home to 200 species of fish (including a rare seahorse) and is surrounded by a natural paradise of lush indigenous forests, tranquil lakes and golden beaches, making it a real natural wonderland.

Knysna won the title of South Africa's favourite holiday town for two consecutive years competitions (run every two years), lastly in 2002. It was also voted the most popular small town the by the Sunday Times Lifestyle readers in 2001.

Knysna is a place of beauty lying on the banks of an enormous estuary alongside South Africa's most famous indigenous forests.

From the sedate and ecological activity such as canoeing along the Knysna River to extreme sports such as bungee jumping, there is a wide range of things to do.

For beaches you can visit Brenton- on- Sea, Buffalo Bay, and the wave free beach of Bollard Bay on Leisure Isle is excellent for families with children.

Plettenberg Bay

One of South Africa's most fashionable beach resorts with endless wide and sandy beaches. The town is set on a gently curving sandy bay backed by mountains stretching from horizon to horizon.

In Plettenberg Bay warm sunny days stretch into long pleasurable evenings where you'll find both rest and adventure.

The Bay boosts schools of playful dolphins and whales including the rare Tropical Beaked whale. Many elevated look-out points offer excellent land-based whale watching or you can book a boat trip to see these gentle giants at close quarters.

The Bay also offers excellent scuba diving and snorkelling on the Tsitsikamma shore with the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains forming the backdrop for many nature reserves including the famous Robberg Nature Reserve.

The great beauty of Plettenberg Bay attracts many artists and the village is filled with galleries, studios and interesting shops of local artists.

Restaurants are plentiful with something for everyone from beach side cafes to high quality oceanfront dining rooms.

Plettenberg Bay has been described as a holiday maker's paradise and an eco-tourists dream. Whatever you're looking for there's a good chance you'll find it at Plettenberg Bay.
