On the banks of the Irrawaddy river, Bagan Thiripyistaya Sanctuary Resort is spread over 24 acres of landscaped gardens. We think it has one of the best swimming pools in the country - huge and located right next to the Ayeyarwaddy River - it's picture perfect! Stay among tropical trees, flowers, native animals and watch beautiful peacocks walk by every morning.

The rooms are decorated in a simple style. Standard rooms offer a comfortable and relaxing place to stay, while Deluxe Classic rooms offer a little more space views of a Meditation Garden, the backdrop of the beautiful Ayeryawaddy River or bamboo grove. Both of these room types are at the back of the resort (away from the river) and because it is such a large resort it take about three-four minutes in a golf buggy to get to the riverside swimming pool and restaurant.

Deluxe Garden View bungalows look out to the landscaped gardens. Each has a spacious veranda and a bath tub or shower. Deluxe River View bungalows have large windows offering river views and a veranda with loungers, and each room includes a bath. The Deluxe Rooms (both garden and river view) are worth the upgrade in our opinion as they are in a much nicer location with more space an sweet, slanted ceilings.

Guests looking for a more secluded and luxurious stay can choose one of the hotel's eight suites which open to the river. Sunsets can be enjoyed on the wide veranda and the spacious suite includes a sitting room, bedroom and bathroom with terrazzo bathtub. The rooms are far away from reception and are ideal for those looking to unwind in peace and tranquility.

The restaurant serves a mix of delicious Myanmar, Asian and Western dishes and low-calories and vegetarian choices are available. Chefs use organic vegetables and herbs grown in the resort's gardens and ingredients are washed in purified water. Breakfast is served al-fresco on the terrace, which is transformed by candlelight in the evening. Guests can move to the Pavilion Lounge to enjoy a cocktail after a day of sight-seeing. For special dining experiences, Thiripyitsaya can arrange Royal Dinners at the Pagoda Garden, complete with an option of donning Myanmar royal costumes.

The spa offers not only massages and facials but a host of treatments designed to relax and rejuvenate travellers. Choose from hot volcanic stone body treatment, oil and steam treatment, hand or foot paraffin therapy, or skin treatments such as sea salt body polish, chocolate body refresh and taramind and honey body scrub.

Guests looking for a spiritual experience can join a Vipassana Meditation programme, while those looking to explore can visit historical Bagan or take a boat trip, rent a bicycle or even travel by horse and cart. Golf sets can be hired from reception and players can enjoy a round amid cultural sites of Bagan. The resort also have a pool surrounded by loungers, where guests can enjoy a refreshing dip.
