Nestled down a small side street in the northern part of the medina in Marrakech, this fabulous place is a mix of traditional Moroccan and French colonial style and offers the height of luxury.

Situated not far from Bab Tarzout and the Zaouis (shrines) of Sidi bel Abbes and Sidi ben Slimane el-Jazouli, La Maison Arabe began life as a restaurant in the 1940s and in its time has been patronised by well-known names including Winston Churchill. Today it is an elegant and refined example of traditional Moroccan hospitality.

This is a captivating place, full of charm, built around two flower-filled courtyards, one of which has an old olive tree at its centre. Restoration has paid homage to traditional building methods and walls are covered in tadelakt and floors in berjmat, small sand-coloured bricks. Cedar wood features everywhere, notably in the library.

Public and private spaces are tastefully decorated and furnished in rich silks and brocades. Colours just sing out at you and are reminiscent of the sights and sounds of the nearby souks. There is plenty of space to relax and take tea, either in the shady courtyards or in one of the many salons.

The 9 double rooms and 8 suites are very refined and have been decorated with authentic touches. Each room is air-conditioned and heated in winter and has satellite TV and safe. Most rooms have their own private terrace, surrounded by oleander, plumbago and jasmine. The marble or granite bathrooms are glorious and very colourful.

La Maison Arabe is the only hotel in Marrakech to offer its guests a choice of "town" and "country" swimming pools. The generously sized on-site pool at La Maison Arabe - 14 x 5 meters - is among the largest in the medina. Geometric symbols, echoing those found on Berber carpets, line its floor and walls. This pool is heated in winter and enjoys a large sunbathing area that is elevated and hidden behind olive trees for privacy.
The 18 x 7 meter swimming pool at the Private Gardens is located just 15 minutes away from the hotel by complimentary shuttle and is reserved exclusively for guests of La Maison Arabe. There is no additional charge for the use of this unique and beautiful oasis retreat that adjoins the Royal Nursery and belongs to the owner of the hotel. It is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the medina, or enjoy a savoury lunch surrounded by roses, fig trees and bougainvillea. Before arriving at the swimming pool, one walks through an organic vegetable garden which provides herbs and produce used in the hotel's kitchens and cooking workshops. The Private Garden's two acres also include a large tent and casbah building, which provide a magical setting for a private "1001 Nights" party, reception, or intimate concert or recital which can easily be organized by La Maison Arabe.

You can take breakfast in your room, on the terrace, in the courtyard, or in any of the salons. Dining at La Maison Arabe is legendary. The restaurant offers a full choice of traditional Moroccan or international food.

There is also a cookery school where you can try your hand at local dishes such as tagines, couscous and delicious pastries.

The staff is extremely obliging, and will help you with anything you need from directions to anywhere in Marrakech to booking you a massage.

A car is available to collect you from the airport.

The property is located in Marrakech, just 20 minutes by car from the airport.
