Tucked away on the small paradise island of Tioman, Japamala offers incredible comfort and privacy in a natural setting. The resort was built in the most sustainable way feasible: without felling a single tree or disturbing a rock. In some of the villas, a boulder or tree provides a unique component of the interior design.

All villas are designed with a 'rustic-yet-luxurious' style. Soft fabrics and warm wood contrast large glass windows and polished cement to create a sumptuous, home-like feel of island chic. Much of the wood is repurposed or sustainably-sourced bamboo and the woodwork was done entirely by local craftsmen.

Treetop Chalets offer the feel of a jungle hideaway high in the canopy. Although only a short walk from the beach, you'll hear the sounds of the forest here more than the ocean. Seacliff Chalets are the opposite, sitting above the lagoon and offering views of the South China Sea. Both types have comfortable balconies ideal for curling up with a book or simply enjoying the view.

Jungle Luxe Sarangs have a private outdoor tub surrounded by rainforest. These luxurious rooms are set back in the lower terrain of the resort. Split-level Hillside Sarangs have an ensuite whirlpool tub, indoor and outdoor showers, a lounge separate from the bedroom, and a spacious timbre deck with a sun bed.

The Seaview Sarang offers a romantic retreat with unparalleled privacy. This secluded villa has a plunge pool, outdoor wading pool, kitchenette, dining area, and large deck. Penghulu's House is a two-story, two-bedroom villa nestled between the beach and the jungle. Upstairs is the main bedroom while downstairs are two single beds. The house has an indoor wading pool and an outdoor plunge pool. An ideal choice for families.

There are three restaurants at Japamala. The overwater Mandi Mandi serves international cuisine with an Italian emphasis. Tamarind Tioman focuses on Thai and Vietnamese fare, while Il Tempio dishes up contemporary Italian cuisine. Local seafood and sustainably sourced ingredients feature prominently in all three.

Walking trails through the jungle lead to a sunset spot and Genting Village. Boat rides to other villages, neighboring islands for snorkeling and lunch on a beach, and to see other highlights of Tioman island can be arranged. Diving can be organised with a nearby dive centre. Samadhi Spa offers an array of massage services.

Japamala can be reached by the resort's private speedboat (operating March through October) from the port of Mersing, a town approximately four hours by car from Kuala Lumpur or three hours from Singapore. The boat crossing takes around 45 minutes.
