This secluded and luxurious lodge sits on Don Daeng, an island in the middle of the Mekong River, surrounded by lush tropical gardens with a private river beach.

Reaching La Folie may just be one of the most unique travel experiences of your time in South Laos. Located on the the pretty island of Don Daeng, you will take a boat across the Mekong before boarding a hand-crafted tractor which will take you across the river beach to the door of the hotel! (Note - there is only a river beach in the dry season)

This lovely lodge, with a delightful swimming pool and charming gardens, is ideal for those who want to get away from everything for a few days. Located near Champasak, it’s a great base for everything from exploring temples to discovering the 4,000 islands further south - not to mention just hiring a bicycle and exploring your new backyard on the island of Don Daeng.

La Folie pivots around its sunset-facing restaurant, which is dotted with carved elephants and looks out onto the inviting royal-blue swimming pool.

There are 13 stilted wooden bungalows threaded through the flower beds and well-tended gardens of the lodge. Each houses two identical rooms, most of them superiors which face west across the main tributary of the Mekong, and have a private balcony with two chairs. The two standard rooms face onto the garden and are thus considerably cheaper.

Rooms are spacious with polished wooden floors, fresh flowers and Lao silk textiles attractively draped on the beds (doubles or twins). Lamps provide soft lighting and there are 2 small chairs, a desk and a table in the corner of rooms. Ensuite bathrooms feature useful bamboo ladders for towels and loo rolls, plus a welcome supply of soaps, shampoos and bundles of fluffy white towels. You also get a hairdryer, and gushing hot water in a corner shower unit.

Ban Lao - the Lao House - offers a unique opportunity to stay in a traditional wooden house lovingly modernised. The house, once located in a nearby village, was slated for demolition so the owners of La Folie found another fate for it. Now renovated, updated, and comfortably furnished, this gem of southern Lao architecture looks out over the Mekong, welcoming guests to a piece of history with all the modern amenities one needs.

For those seeking a more upscale accommodation experience, you'd be advised to book the spacious 2-bedroomed neo-colonial The Residence, which has a stylish lounge area with kitchenette and honesty bar. French windows open out onto a wide veranda which overlooks the Mekong River. Additional amenities include an LCD TV and DVD player, CD player and air-con (there are a collection of DVDs to choose from). The Residence also benefits from full housekeeping services plus a security guard on patrol at night.
