Originally a traditional merchant house in the Taisho era (20th century), the antique Inn Sumiyoshi is a small and charming Japanese inn that has kept its original architecture to this day. The owners are widely known for their kind hospitality and will make you will feel at home from the moment you step through the door.

Ideally located in central Takayama, the hotel is perfect for sightseeing in front of the morning markets and near the old district. The train station is 14 minutes away by foot or seven minutes by taxi.

An authentic experience, this traditional ryokan has a unique historical Japanese atmosphere. Alongside the original architecture, the hotel is decorated with ancient porcelains, artefacts, dolls and furniture – there’s even samurai armour in the lobby!

This intimate ryokan has just 20 tatami rooms each offering either a river or garden view. Since this is a very traditional ryokan, only one room has private bathroom and toilet as traditionally bathing would be done in the common hot spring baths. For the rooms with no private toilet and bathroom there are well-maintained shared toilets and hot spring baths. The baths can also be used privately upon request.

This ryokan is well-known among travellers for its tasty homemade traditional Japanese cuisine including many local specialities such as miso cooked over a magnolia leaf. As is usual in a ryokan, dinner and breakfast is included in your stay.
